Hi,

I'm considering buying a Steam Link, but I'm really not sure my router would be powerful enough. It's a 300mpbs TP-Link TD-W8960N. I've seen on the Steam forums that the Link actually uses 50mbps (I guess 300mbps is just a theoretical speed), while most people highly recommend AC WiFi or a wired connection. My computer is way too far from the living room, but I can connect the Link to the router with a cable, but I'm not sure if this would change anything. I also won't be able to return the Link if it doesn't work because I don't live in the US.

So has any of you try to use the Link with a similar router?

Thanks

It's probably not worth buying without wired or AC. It's going to have a lot of latency and is going to be very difficult to play. Even with wired, I've noticed I play worse on my Steam Link.

300 Mbps is fine on the 5.2-5.8GHz side but on the 2.4GHz there's too much packet loss. So even if you upgraded to a cheap dual band you'd likely be perfectly fine as long as your not going through too many walls.

I know that TP-LINK TD-W8980 will work but for the price you could by a cheapo AC1200 router and a ADSL2+ modem compatible with your carrier.

I'm still getting mixed opinions ! I think I will get it, then upgrade my router later if I find a good deal.
