So in my current build I have a MSI Z77A-G43 gaming board which I would like to keep but, Ill be moving cases and changing colour schemes from black/red to white/blue so I was thinking maybe get the board painted to match my scheme?

This is the original design

If done right - no

Might have slightly little higher temps on the heatsinks, but not much big. Of course if you dont plan on doing much layers on it.

Remove the heatsinks, prep them, paint and put back on mobo.

Also wanna do a little stress test to check mobo temps before you take the heatsinks off and after the painting.

I wouldn't paint it with the motherboard connected. take off the heatsinks first don't just try and cover the board.

Remove the heatsinks, clean off all the old paint, and then get them powder coated. This should prevent any change in temps (I'm pretty sure anyway). I don't think I'd recommend just going for it with spray paint :P

If a fine layer of dust can increase temps, then a coat of paint will impact temps. By how much? Probably very little, but as a painter I know that red is the hardest to cover.

I completely agree that the red has to be removed, but can it? Is it a chemical discoloration? I would research a chemical bath that will turn them black. Blue may be out of the question. I'm sure any research on coloring gun parts (blueing) will give similar incite.

I was thinking about doing this to my z77a g45 board which is blue/black, do you think covering the blue would be difficult, I would prefer to not have to sand the entire heat sync down lol

That's a really good point. I'm not sure how MSI colors their products, so some research should be done to find that out.

I was on the right track partially. Aluminum heatsinks are anodyzed. They can be de-anodyzed with oven cleaner/parts degreaser according to a R/C forum.

Now... re-anodyzing and dyeing... involves an acid bath/application. I didn't completely research past that.

So in other words someone who has no painting experience like me should either learn quick or find a new blue/white board? :P

I think maintaining the dragon is likely to be a huge amount of extra work.  Keeping them just blue might be easiest.

You could also look into just redoing the heatsinks with blue aftermarket parts.  Some options here http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l2/g40/c16/list/p1/Air_Cooling-Chipset_HeatsinksCoolers.html or http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=54_197 seem to have blue options.  You might be able to find something that will work for you and your color scheme. This also means you would not have to destroy any part of your current MOBO, so that you can still RMA/resell it possibly.

Well, look at it this way. If you can pull off diy anodyzing and showcase your build log, people will want to do the same. Imagine the sabretooth boards, in what ever color combo you want. Could be a huge service to the community or a money maker.

Tech changes so often with revision after revision. Changing your mobo is definately an option.

This is very ambitious and may very well effect overall cooling performance.

Maybe investigate if the old paint can be striped off and then repainted.

No matter how you attempted this........Make sure you remove heat-sinks from

the Motherboard and unplug PSU from wall outlet until heat-sinks are re-installed.

Oh yea. You can disassemble it first if you want the best paint job. Or mask the fan side and back side pending you keep it down facing and paint away. Good prep is key. degrease, sand/scuff, prime, finish.

I've painted lots of guns. Krylon laquer in a green spray can is my favorite clear coat. You can handle it sooner and leaves a candy clear. If you don't want glossy which for a psu I wouldn't prefer gloss, then go for a matte clear.

  • 1 month later...

Somebody who painted his motherboard heatshrinks actually saw a tempature decrease. He figured that paint is actually better for cooling then anodyzing (or whatever it is) but that motherboard manufacters do this for cost reasoning. I will look if I can find the topic again, it was in OC3D I think. I am looking to paint my motherboard aswell and will do this with a hand brush. Not spray painting, Ofcourse I will cover up the parts around it so I dont spill any paint by accident. The covering up part is some tape that isn't that sticky. I got it in a PM wich tape it was again, argh.. im in a hurry haha! ^^

Will update this.
