i7 6700k + RAM

It tells me that the i7 6700k only is compatible with RAM @ 2133Mhz maximum, but I've googled it and many people are saying you can bypass this by enabling "XMP" in the bios to be able to use RAM with up to 3000 Mhz, such as the G.Skill TridentZ. So is it true that the i7 6700k can be used with 3000 Mhz RAM?

Sure if you have a Z170 chip-set that support it, also double check with the mobo makers support page and see if the planned RAM is compatible! (yet you wont be able to measure any gains past 2800MHz according to the majority of people...)

YEs it will work faster.. you need to do some more research as xmp profiles are not guarenteed and some knowledge of overclocking would be good... Or read a simple how to.. you don't need to know everything, but cover the basics.

 

Also, you don't need to spend loads on special kits.. you can overclock the ram.

 

And it's not going to give you huge performance gains.

Yes, no problem, I think 2133Mhz is just the max they have tested them with. In the bios is pretty easy to set you ram at its default speed, mine is 2133 but there are plenty options in the bios that go over it.

If the mobo manual says supported ram 3000mhz then yes but if its ram 3000(oc) then no. That means you may oc up to that point.

But you also have to read the supported ram modules list to do so. Because not all can but some are tested to work.

Higher speed RAM has always been a wierd one.. Most of the time you won't gain anything in games if ur not using ur iGPU or APU for it.

This was quite unnecessary because we know he is going to run a i7 6700k but sure keep reposting aslong as its relevant

But what if he plays Arma or DayZ? No CPU is sufficient for that then the faster RAM will boost the FPS up!

The 6700K's IMC is only tested at 2133Mhz ram. Anything higher is classed as an overclock. XMP just automatically sets that overclock.

 

You can buy 3000Mhz ram and the motherboard takes it fine, but the CPU just can't handle it and so the computer won't post or forces you to have 2133Mhz max.

It's a risk, 9/10 you'll be fine if it's on the QVL. If you start going stupid, like 3600Mhz, 4000 then you should expect problems.
