I want to setup a home NAS using an old PC.
I want it to automatically backup photos/videos from my iOS and android devices with little or no human interaction. Also, I want to stream videos and pictures from it to my laptops and mobile devices and a macbook.
What should I do? I am beginner and looking forward to learn from this experience.

P.S. I have a WD8968 as a router.

I would just use google pictures ... less hassle. It has unlimited photo space but video take up google drive space though .... You can try try plex premium which does sync for you. The other option is free which is use Rsync in freenas(A homenas OS) and use plex to stream video or CIFS share to access them.

by old do you mean Core 2 Duo old?

I've heard a plugin for FreeNAS which is called Bitsync. you could acess your data at anytime and anywhere (assuming you port forward it correctly)

I cant use cloud storage due to bandwidth concerns.

Also, it is my first time setting up a NAS, so it would be helpful if you could elaborate or link me up to something more informative.

By old, I mean Pentium 4 @ 3.06GHz.
Its a pre-built from Compaq (P4-524) with 1GB RAM

If you are setting up a NAS you can google or check out tek syndicate channel where they do in dept video how to setup a NAS and for software setup if you just google "how to set up freenas" there are tonnes of different videos ranging for quick and in dept guide for installing the FREENAS software. If you are using low spec computer i won't recommend FREENAS as it needs 8GB recommended memory.  Or you can go install window server 2003 or Ubuntu server (http://www.ubuntu.com/download/server) both have completing different guide and information regarding them. I would watch some tek syndicate video about HomeNAS.

That 1gb of ram limits you greatly. The p4 is a power hog and slow but for NAS purposes it could be ok. Depending on where you live and your budget you may be better off buying a used computer / server from your local auction / classifieds website.
