144Hz.

Only on 4K people say image is so smooth even drops under 60 are not noticable as much.

27"+ = 1440p. Under 27" I'd say 1080p.

But then, make sure the system in question can even play games at 1440p or 1080@144hz. If you cannot, may be better off spending the money on better hardware before a new monitor.

i think everybody's comfortable "unnoticeable" frame rate varies from person to person. 60's a turd sometimes, sometimes it's not. then there are people who say it is okay just to feel at ease with the expensive monitor they purchased. me, I like the 90+ end of things.

then of course you need to take the game in question under consideration. FPS  and racing games I find respond better to higher refresh rates making them more enjoyable to play.

then you need to consider the size of the monitor vs the resolution of that monitor.

To me, much of this depends on the games being played. If you are playing competitive FPS then 1080 144. If you are more of a RPG player, I would definitely go with the 1440.

Exactly, there is no "better for gaming", there are different games, styles and needs.

@Rhett Quigley You need to define what games you want to play. For FPS/competitive gaming, 144Hz is better, but for RPG and alike, 1440p or 29" 2560x1080 ultrawide. You have R9 390, so some 29" 2560x1080 75 Hz FreeSync ultrawide from LG would fit your system perfectly.

Also you didn't say anything about budget.

I pretty much only play fps games online. I already have a 25" 1440p monitor, which I can tell is an improvement over 1080p, but not drastic. People say that a 144hz over 60hz is a drastic difference, and I can picture it being a huge advantage in competive games I play.

There is a big difference in games in which you can make use of this 144Hz and run game at very high framerates, and game itself has to be of characteristic where you can benefit from higher refresh rate, it has to be very dynamic. But many games cannot be run nowhere near 100FPS+ withou crazy multi GPU setups, and are not super dynamic, so overall difference between 60/75 and 144Hz is not that drastic across all games. But in very dynamic FPS games with low requirements like CS:GO it definitely makes difference. So if you play only this kind of games, then get 1080p 144Hz.

Problem is that 144Hz 1080p IPS monitors doesn't exist, so you would have to get monitor with low-end panel.

It should change with time, resfresh rate will grow with technology and more manufacturers should decide and be able to create all in one monitors, with both quality high refresh rate. So far there is only some gaming garbage from joke manufacturers like Asus or Acer, IPS 144Hz+ with terrible quality issues and terrible price, but it will change with time, more manufacturers will create high refresh rate monitors and push their quality panels and products to higher refresh rate. I am okay with 60 and 75 Hz, so no problem for me, I just want OLED for perfect image quality.

The cheapest 144hz monitor I have seen is $190.
