OS & AV recommendation for old PC

Hi,

 

I'm combining some rather old PC parts to build a complete system that would be connected to a 22" CRT SD TV.

Intel P4 1.7GHz, DFI MBO with VIA A133 (or something like that), 768MB SD-RAM, 80 & 20 GB HDD, Radeon 9000 64MB, Mercury 350W, old case...

And now I'm asking which OS to put on the system? I'm thinking of XP with SP3, Linux or something of that sort.

I would need a free Antivirus too, protection not that important but it shouldn't use the whole system for itself if you know what I mean.

For running on a P4 machine, linux would be the right way to go, as it runs much better on slower systems than windows does. 

The VIA A113 is a nasty horrible graphics card made by a very small company that barely supports any standards (don't use it keep the radeon 9000)

 

As for anti-virus well.. linux doesn't really need an anti-virus, the chance you get some form of malicious software is slim to none and its often trivial to remove. There are firewalls for linux systems but normally they are only really used on internet faceing systems, which yours probably wont be.

Older motherboards had GPUs on the chipsets. I was mainly pointing to the specifics of the GPUs being crappy in them (much worse than really old intel generic chipsets)

And you are sure the system would show the image on the TV using the old S-video cable (the one that reminds on PS/2 connector) on Linux?
