Hello,

I was thinking about buying a *shiver* pre-built desktop for dev work and some video editing work,  (budget is around $1200 USD

also been playing around in PCPartPicker, and I cant decide on what to do (so here for advice)

can someone build me a desktop (no periferals, but include the OS) that is in the $1200 price range that would be awesome for dev work and video editing work, (but not necessarily for gaming)

thanks

You could always get your OS off reddit, that way you can save some cash and get another SSD or the like

OP should note that many of these components are last gen; its worth considering i7 68/9XX CPUs and an RX 480 in place of the 390 (faster and cheaper)  RX 480 is due mid june so I'd say its worth the wait

You don't need a 6 core for dev work TBH, you also don't need 2011 socket.

Small C drive SSD for dev work is terrible, get much bigger.

A high end video card like that is just not needed.

Comb it with a brick

He can get the 480 if he wants to. I'm making this list under the assumption he's buying now and needs it now. As for the 68/9xx cpus, again, he can get them if he wants them. You should know, the 6800k is a $100 more pricey than the 5820k however,

Well I don't know what dev. work entails, so if you can do better be my guest. I just make these things under what I know and infer from that.

I actually was thinking about getting a xeon instead of an i7,

Also a 256gb or larger SSD,  but its easy to tweak parts lists.

Agreed about the no high end video card.  I wont be using it at all

Eh, like I said, no clue what dev. work entails. More of my forte lays in video editing/rendering, gaming, and similar.

I should have specified.  I am sorry I wasn't more clear.

More cores = better

more memory = better

larger ssd for OS = better

storage other than main drive = meh

video card = meh

overclocking ability = meh

An i7-6700 should be more than enough for the described usage. I've included 32GB of memory to allow for multiple vm. A 512GB ssd should be enough storage, but hdd can be added if more is needed.

I like this build,  not sure how I feel about a 960 but I dont think I would have use for anything more so I guess its alright.

Why did no one recomend a Xeon and everyone is pointing in the direction of i7s?

Because the i7s tend to be more cost effective in the cores/threads to dollar ratio. Although, ECC ram might help you in your use case scenario no?

I do large calculations and number crunching for mathematical computations, (mostly multi-threaded)  stuff generally is bottlenecked by memory or number of cores.

Will you use any co-processors or compute acceleration components?

Perhaps you could look into workstation boards and an E5 Xeon.

Maybe ditch the high-end cards to afford a higher core-count.

Reason I suspected a larger SSD would be useful is for the huge IDEs these days and all the emulators for various platforms and virtualization needs.

You should use a Xeon, but I don't know xeons very well so I'm not sure which one is best for this
