Up/Down Speed help

So I recently acquired a new computer. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ibuypower-desktop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-2tb-hard-drive-120gb-solid-state-drive-white/4513601.p?id=1219756373476&skuId=4513601). When downloading my games from Steam, I was only getting 1 mb/s max download. I am running a wireless connection, and did a speed test and got 2down/1up. I then ran a speed test on my brothers wireless MacBook and he got 50/50. Is this a problem with bestbuy and should I return it, or an easy problem that can be fixed? All help is appreciated.

Most likely whatever Wifi card they put in it just sucks. Also, I hope you know you got ripped off.

Sounds like the WiFi card is just plain crap, if you have a long enough cable to test I would try plugging up directly and doing the test. Just remember, speedtest shows output in MegaBITs while steam download shows in MegaBYTEs. 1 MB = 8Mb, so on a 50/50 connection you should see roughly 6MBps on steam downloads.

Yea, you definatly didn't get a great deal on a desktop.  And there are 100 different factors to put into play with your internet connection.  Not to include OSX and Windows calculate transfer speeds differently.  Additionally, you need to make sure that you're using the correct capitalization, there is no such thing as 'mb/s'.  SO in turn, I don't know if you mean 1 Mbps or 1MBps?  Please verify your information and come back to us with a better description of your issues.

Could be the wifi card but its an AC one so I doubt it. What brand is it?

 

Also have you tried a wired connection?

It is Mbps. I used Ookla to test it, so that is the term I got.

Okay, and what do you pay for, what kind of router do you have, how many people are on the network, what servers do you have going, what other traffic is going?  We need more information.

I have Verizon router, installed by them. It is normally 15/15 in all my past attempts. Also yesterday, people on the other side of my city had no Wi-Fi, can that possibly be why it was weak. The only reason I have worry is because of the fact of my brother's speed test compared to mine. I have no servers going on, and not much trafficking.

15/15 what?  Since you didn't say anything I'm going to assume 15bps/15bps.  In which case, your internet is worse than dialup, you'll just have to suffer.  And are you saying that other people had INTERNET problems or WiFi problems?  How is their router not working going to have anything to do with your router?

If your brother is getting 50/50 but you're paying for 15/15 then you're getting a good bump in speed for free.
