Hello everyone I'm new to the PC community (waiting on parts for first pc to come in) and saw the announcement for the new RX 480 and was curious about preordering one. Is there specific time that new gpu go on preorder or is it just go to local store to buy one?

Only tech store in my area is best buy so I usually just buy things online and want to grab one at that 200 point. I'm US based if that helps.

Thank you and sorry for the noob like question.

But why? Preordering is baaaad. If benchmarks were available, sure, it'd make some sense.

But they aren't right now, so don't be dumb and go looking for preorders just yet.

Sorry to disappoint you... It has just been unveiled... You'll have to wait for a bit...

I'm sure there will be some before the launch day, there's no way AMD would just let it hit retail shelves without reassuring that $200 price tag isn't a joke.

It makes a little more sense from a practical standpoint to preorder a physical product, especially when it's a video card, which tend to be in very high demand and go out of stock for a few weeks after launch.

However, I agree, it's still somewhat silly to buy a video card before you have seen independent performance benchmarks. I would just wait, personally.

I'm going for simple 1080 gaming right now so I figure a card that can handle vr at that price can destroy 1080 and also give me some long term value when I do get into 1440 and so on. Also haven't gotten a gpu for build yet and was going to get a 270 4G for 150 so figured 200 or 230 (more likely) was nothing to get new tech.

I don't have one atm and I want great 1080 with some long term value if I move to higher resolutions so it seemed like the obvious choice.

Don't ever pre-order hardware without seeing legitimate benchmarks... it just asks for disaster.

Look at AMD's advertising in the past about the Fury X being 20% better than Titan X and how well that went lol

Sorry guys figured in my situation preordering one asap even without benchmarks was the go to way. I need a GPU and want it for great 1080 so I figure no matter what the benchmarks come out to be in reality it will still far exceed my current needs and like I said I need to get a gpu anyways so it seemed the logical path to take.

First 480 post I've seen today. I'm happy to see a $200 price point entry, speculated 390 performance, card.
As for preorders, there is still a lot left unanswered for the 480 and I think you'll just have to wait.

I personally think you're probably right, chances are good it will be a great card at 1080p and probably even do alright at 1440p. And especially without a $200 Pascal competitor, it's probably going to be the best midrange card to have for awhile. You're free to preorder the card if you ultimately decide to, of course. Our job here is just to make sure you are aware of the information and your options.

AMD and Nvidia usually aren't lying outright on their own benchmarks, they're usually reasonably close to the independent data. But just assume what you're seeing from them are the best-case scenarios for their product that they can find. They also tend to lack a lot of in-depth detail. They don't tell you much about in-game settings, frame latency analysis, power/heat, framerate per dollar, etc. which a written review on the major tech sites would provide.
