Hard drive not listed

Go to solution Solved by obsidian1200,

If you're 100% sure disk 0 is the one you need to format/erase, you can use diskpart in an elevated command prompt to do that. Simply open a command prompt as an admin and type in "diskpart" to launch the command line utility. Diskpart is a utility included with Windows.

Next, type "list disk" to produce a list of disks. In this case, you seem sure disk 0 is your target disk, but it never hurts to double check before a format.

Type "select disk 0" and hit enter to select the disk.

Then type "clean", which will clear the current partition table on disk 0.

After the cleaning completes, assuming it does, type "Create partition primary" to create a new partition.

Then, type "format quick fs=[insert filesystem fat32, ntfs, or exfat here] label=[name of drive]" and hit enter.

After that, type "assign letter=[drive letter]" and ht enter. The drive should now show up in explorer with the label and letter you assigned.

My friend just gave me a hard drive and i cant really get it to work. In the Asus H97m-PLUS mobo bios it is not listed in the boot priority but it is listed if you do so further digging (I have 4 storage devices total; my boot drive, my optical drive, and two other hard drives including the one I just got.) The only ones listed in the boot priority are my boot drive and my optical drive. But the one I just got is listed in the bios but not file explorer. So it works but how do I utilize it in Windows.

It must be formatted in Windows using Disk Management or some third party utility, such as Minitool Partition Wizard(free).

You might need to format it. You can try creating a Linux Live USB/disk and looking at it there.

Edit: You can also press Windows Key + R and type diskmgmt.msc, then see if it's listed there. Format and partition it.

That's because the drives previously were already formatted. This drive will need to be initialized.

How do I do that because in disk manager I can't reformat it or initialize it.

Can you post a screenshot?

that is the screen shot of when I open disk management. Also I believe disk zero is the one that I'm trying to reformat.

What's stopping you from formatting it? Be absolutely 100% certain that it is the drive you want formatted.

When I right click it when there is a format option it is grey implying that I can't do it.

Which drive are you actually trying to format? Ensure you're not trying to format your boot drive.

I'm am 90+% sure it is disk 0. because you can see the titles for the other disks and I haven't named the new one.

Try using MiniTool Partition Wizard instead of Disk Management. I find that to be a better tool. Upon applying the changes, a system reboot might be required.

Do I have to download that or is it a windows tool.

It's a third party tool and will require downloading.
