Raid with different drives

Go to solution Solved by xentropa,

For raid 1 yes it is safe.

1 WD red + 1 WD Black if both are the same capacity is totally safe.

I am thinking of building a NAS or make it a NAS. Currently have a 2tb blacks in the server,  I want some redundancy going so I  want to do RAID 1. But  I also  need to buy another drive, I was thinking of buying a WD RED 2 tb (their cheaper then blacks and their more designed for nas).   Now it is safe to mix RED and blacks due of the red having the  RPM adaption? or other factors?

Thanks guys

Not necessarily

Depending on which raid solution you have, there are ways to make the process a bit "smarter"

For example, the data can be first written all to the black and the machine can continue until there is some idle time to let the red catch up.

Certain raid 1 configurations can potentially double your read time by having both hdds access data at the same time.
