I've been messing around with overclocking my GTX 760 some more and I've found a stable overclock but the temperature is the thing I'm somewhat worried about. Is a 90C temp safe to be running on a reference GTX 760? Is 90C really safe for any GPU or do I need to lower the power/temp limit for my card?

90c is pretty high. Keep it below ~85c if possible.

90C aint a good idea. Ramp up the fan speed and try to knock this down to sub 85. Otherwise, reduce the voltages.

I recommend taking down the overclock a tad bit and ramping up the fan speed about 15-20%. Use MSI Afterburner to do this in real time so you dont have to turn off your pc all the time while overclocking.

I was actually able to just lower voltage and power limit and still maintain the overclock i had and keep it stable. I was actually able to push it even further and get a higher clock with temps staying at 81C

that sounds great :)

81°C is fine for your GPU.

Well the R9 290 ran at 95C out of the box so I'd say 90 is okay especially for an older GPU like yours. Sure it will reduce the lifespan somewhat but if you plan on upgrading in less than a year don't worry about it.

95*C is for Hawaii, not Kepler.

Yeah but this is only what the company says is ok.

They're both circuits at 28nm. There shouldn't be that much of a difference in heat tolerance since they are just different arcs on the same node.

Doesn't the 760 throttle at that temp though? When does it throttle?

The difference is the way everything is soldered together

Ok.

What soldering do you mean? There really isn't a heatspreader on the die. You mean the die itself? The processes from AMD and Nvidia can't be that much different.

Also 97C is fine according to Nvidia:
