Hello there,

I'm planning on building/upgrading my existing system. It's been many years since I was into system building, so my knowledge is nowhere near up to date, and need as much advice as I can get!

I want/need to upgrade as much as possible. I'm not going ultra hardcore, but still looking at the enthusiast range. Here's my current system...

CPU: i7 3770k with H80 Water Cooler

RAM: 32GB DDR3 (4 x 8GB)

MOBO: Asus P8Z77-V

GPU: GTX 670 SLI

SOUND: Soundblaster Z

HDD: 120GB SSD for OS, 3TB 7200 for Storage

PSU: Novatech Gold 1200W

CASE: Coolermaster Cosmos 1000

MONITOR: DELL U2711 2560x1440

Pretty dated as you can see...

Here's my general plan...

CPU: 6700k - I bought a H100i last year which I've yet to open, hoping to make use of it (didn't think I'd get it on my Cosmos 1000)?

RAM: 32gb, no idea which to go for

GPU: GTX 1080 FE (arriving tomorrow!)

SOUND: Existing Soundblaster Z

MOBO: No idea, have always used Asus

HDD: M.2 for OS, Existing 3TB for Storage

PSU: Existing Novatech Gold 1200W - I assume this is usable?

CASE: Wouldn't mind upgrading my case, had it for years now. Prefer a full tower, so long as I can potentially go SLI in the future and fit the H100i/Alternative water cooling for CPU. I love the look of the InWin cases but their so expensive, though Phanteks seem like a better option?

MONITOR: Existing DELL U2711 2560x1440 (maybe 4k at some point)

I love the idea and look of a full watercooling solution but I don't know how much maintenance is required and whether it's worth the hassle.

Here's my part-picker so far

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/yHTPxY

Any and all advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Your CPU,RAM,and MOBO are still more than capable.

If you want to stick with Asus, then go for the Maximus VIII Hero 8, I use it and it is very good. Not sure how well the 1080 handles cooling, but I would go for a large case such as this one. Make sure to have a decent amount of fans, and the existing 1200W should work fine. Ram wise, G-Skill Ripjaws have always preformed well for me, something like this. Hope this helps!

Hehe, well my last one died and that was the only modular one in the shop (when Novatech still had shops)

Can you not sell it and get a smaller power one? You could spend the remaining money on buying food (since you bought the FE card)

Well, not a whole lot of change in recent years. So far your build looks fine. Ram is almost all the same now so pick something from the motherboard qvl or that looks good with your set up. I would still recommend an Asus board so look for one that will fit your I/O and port needs. And that evo m.2 ssd should do you well. As for cases...I'm not the guy to ask.

I am a paid professional, but only when I am at work...and getting paid.

Fanboy edition. The way it's meant to throttle.

Why hey didn't you wait for the aftermarket ones...?

Well I was tempted. But I've been putting it off for so long (since the 700 series!). Planned on getting a 980 series but kept putting it off, then the Ti, then thought I'd wait for the 10 series. And with the my recent games I'm really starting to notice how dated the 670 SLI is, so just went on impulse or I'd never get round to it. Want to get the 1080 Ti but that's probably like 9 months away.

Thanks for you input. Just remembered my existing RAM is G.Skill. I the 750D does seem really popular. I've never heard of Phanteks before but from what I've read their pretty good. So long as I can get the H100i in there, and potentially go for a full liquid cooling solution later. The Phanteks seem really flexible in that regard.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Very much appreciated. Here's what I went with in the end

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/LLPNnn

Was really lucky and managed to get the Asus Hero Alpha for £178 on Amazon and It's back up to £221 already, not sure if it was a mistake on their part but I'm not complaining :D

I'll post pictures when the parts arrive if anyone is interested

Thanks again!

not exactly a great "upgrade". should have got 1 really good graphics card. there is still more life in the platform.

Your enthusiasm is killing me ;)
Well it's not often I have the funds to build a new machine. My existing one is 4-5 years old, and I've always had to go mid-range with most of my components and upgrade bits at a time. But this time I thought screw it, for once I'm going all out (within reason, £300+ for a motherboard is still too much imho!).

I'd say the 1080 is a really good graphics card, wouldn't you? Part of me does wish I waited for the custom cooling solutions from other manufacturers, but If i don't do these things on impulse I never do them at all half the time! I went with the EVGA 1080 in the end so the Step-Up programme maybe a possibility if it comes to it. Though I'm thinking of sticking with it until the 1080 Ti comes out and just selling the one I have now.

Have a nice day!
