Hello, I am wanting to build my first gaming pc. I am having trouble picking a cpu. I want one between 100-150 dollars. I won't be streaming or video/ picture editing on this rig. The cpu will be liquid cooled. i will pick a nice gaming MOBO after I find out what cpu to buy. I will be using one gtx 1070 for a while until I can save for another one for sli. At this point I will liquid cool the entire machine. I know a little about CPUs and am thinking about the amd 8350. It has 8 cores I do believe and I think I only need 4. Are there any other better solutions out there? Also if you can suggest a different cpu, can you please tell me why that would be a better choice?

thank you

Thank you for the quick response. Do you think increasing my budget for a cpu would be a better option?

What kind of games do you want to play and what graphical settings (experience) do you want out of the machine? Selecting the components are based off of what you want to do and how well you want the PC to get things done.

That is a horrible idea. You are going to have a bottleneck.

Skip one the liquid cooling if that does you can afford a better CPU.

Intel cores =/= AMD cores. Intel is more powerful so dont shop after amount of cores.

Do you plan on overclocking? If yes, get the i5 6600k or i5 4690k

If not, get the i5 6500 or i5 4690

Also what is your complete specs list?

I like open world games like elder scrolls and fallout. I want to run pretty much every game on ultra settings. I want the new ghost recon as well.

i think this will show the parts I listed out but instead of the 970 I'll get a 1070

also I do plan on overclocking at some point

Then i would recommend an intel i5 6600k + Asus Z170 Pro Gaming (but any Z170 board will do it). Just note you'll need DDR4 with that.

And i would get a different SSD as the V300 is really, really bad.

What ssd should I go for. Would a Kingston hyper X ssd be a better option.

Also why ddr4 ram.

The HyperX Savage is "meh", the memory controller in it is a little bit wonky.

Samsung 850 Evo is one of the better.

Skylake is only compatible with DDR4 (1,2 volt) and DDR3L (1,35 volt). DDR3 runs at 1,5 volt which can harm the CPU.

Hyper X is good,

But for SATA 3, the general consensus is Samsung 850 pro. If you can afford, then go with a m.2 and get the Samsung 950 pro as most, if not all Z170 boards should support m.2 NVMe, Ensure it can support this as well as PCIe Gen3 x4 to take full advantage of the speeds.

Yes, the Kingston HyperX OR the Samsung 850 EVO would be my recommendations.

You need DDR4 because Intel's 'Skylake' CPUs natively runs with DDR4 memory (or DDR3L -- DDR3 low-voltage).

As an owner with an FX-8350 overclocked to 4.8 / 4.9 GHz...now is 1000% NOT the time to jump onto an AM3+ or FM2+ AMD platform.

Not when Intel's counter-parts wipes the floor with them, and socket AM4's 'Zen' is due to land by the end of 2016.

Plus, as you mentioned, you will not be doing any streaming or video/photo editing, so the advantage of the eight cores will be completely unused.

Uhh...ALL the DDR4 RAM you want...

The 'Skylake' i5-6600K is on the LGA 1151 socket; make sure you select for your motherboard search.

If you are considering the i5-6600K, then look into a Z170 chipset based motherboard.

I see my problem now I had an asrock z170 MOBO picked and I guess it can't use ddr4. Changed to Asus and I'm good

Some Z170 boards use DDR3(L) since the 'Skylake' can use either DDR4 or DDR3L **but not both at the same time**

People should just jump onto DDR4 as:

  • DDR4 prices have gone down similar to DDR3 or DDR3L prices
  • DDR4 operates at a much lower voltage (1.2V versus 1.5V or 1.65V with regular DDR3)
  • The Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) in the CPU is designed to function with 1.35V or lower RAM; 1.5V+ may cause gradual permanent damage to the CPU
  • DDR4 can operate a higher frequencies (2133 MHz is the common standard minimum)

The Samsung 750 EVO is a slower, more budget oriented line-up of SSD's.

Plus the NAND chips that make up the SSD are not rated for as many read / writes.

850 EVO:

  • 5-year warranty
  • Rated for 75 TBW
  • 97,000 IOPS (4KB, QD32) and 10,000 IOPS (4KB, QD1) random read speed
  • 88,000 IOPS (4KB, QD32) and 40,000 IOPS (4KB, QD1)random write speed
  • 2 Million Hours Reliability

750 EVO:

  • 3-year warranty
  • Rated for 35 TBW
  • 94,000 IOPS (4KB, QD32) and 10,000 IOPS (4KB, QD1) random read speed
  • 88,000 IOPS (4KB, QD32) and 35,000 IOPS (4KB, QD1)random write speed
  • 1.5 Million Hours Reliability

Then...the 850 PRO comes with a 10-year warranty...and slightly better performance than the 850 EVO.

How much of a difference does that make while gaming. I planned on just putting my games on a HDD instead of my ssd and using the ssd just for my OS
