So I have upgraded my cpu and motherboard from and amd setup, to an Intel one. So, I heard I should probably reinstall windows. I did, and have had no problems. Then, I was in the middle of a display driver update, and I got the activation pop-up. Previously to windows 10, I had win7. I still obviously have the win7 product key, but it isn't working as I was dreading. I looked all over forums before I had reset windows to see if I would have to buy another copy of Windows, and I found noone saying I would need a new product key. Is there anything I can do at this point?

You shouldn't need a new key, try restarting your computer (if you haven't)

Did you specifically try reentering your Windows 7 key?

Well it had to restart anyways to install the drivers, but when it booted back up the watermark was gone but when I went back into the settings it says that the windows is still not activated. So I have a feeling it will pop-up here soon

I am a bit confused, but if your Windows is OEM or OEM System Builder you need to buy a new license, as it is tied to your motherboard. It is the downside of the cheaper copy of Windows.

Okay, so I was on an amd build with a amd cpu and old mobo. I bought a Windows 7 disc way back and upgraded for free to windows 10. Now, I have upgraded to an Intel cpu, and was told to reinstall windows. So I reset everything, but am now being asked to enter a product key. I only have my windows 7 key. I thought since I upgraded for free, I wouldn't get screwed if I reset my PC and stayed on Windows 10.

Ok, and does your Windows 7 key works in Windows 10 activation box?

If not, what does it say? Do you have tee option to do a phone activation?

I wouldn't think it's too huge of a deal if you've activated W10 it just didn't remove the watermark...

If I got a copy of W10 Education from my school I'd have to live with a watermark like this..

I have entered my product code many times making sure every character is correct and it doesn't work. All it says is "The product key you entered didn't work. Check again and try again, or enter a different one. Error code: 0xc004f050" No phone option.

I'm going to see how long it takes for the annoying watermark to come back, because since I restarted it hasn't come up yet. But I'm not too excited about going right back to windows 7 just to come back to 10. But the key should still be valid for win7 right? I didn't know if it was a key that is useless once it's been used once. And is all my files going to be wiped going to windows 7?

No one really knows how the Windows 10 upgrade activation works in details. Microsoft isn't revealing. My guess, is that the activation servers is basically expecting your old motherboard, and now assumes it is a second computer with the same key. Maybe it will correct itself, but the deadline for the free offer is July 29, and you can bet Microsoft servers to be busy in the last 2 weeks.
