I tried to update to Win10 (seems it's a "better" OS than 8.1 , the only concerns I have are privacy ones and MS's insistence that everyone changes at their say so ).

So tried using the update app, however it reports that the update app is unavaillable for my version of Windows.

Now I thought I was on 8.1 but apparently my version is reported as 6.3 (actually the product version, 8.1 is a BRAND).

How would I go about getting this install to report it is 8.1?

6.3 is the kernel version.

"Windows NT 6.3".

Windows 2000 was NT 5.0

Windows XP was NT 5.1 (5.2 with Service Pack 2)

Windows Vista was NT 6.0

Windows 7 was NT  6.1

Windows 8 was 6.2

Windows 8.1 is 6.3

Windows 10 is 10.0 (or if you prefer: Windows NT 10.0)

I am not sure why you are having this problem. But you download and use Microsoft Media Creation Tool, which does the same thing: Downloads Windows 10, and prepares the system to upgrade.

TY that worked. I do not like not knowing why things don't work but I have chalked that down to "ah well".

Playing with it now; have uninstalled some things that I wont use, some will take a bit of getting used too. , but so far nothing seems to have drastically changed( had classic start installed before so didn't have that boot into start screen nonsense).

To be honest I had seen that media creation tool before but it said it was for the tech savvy so had images of 'running command line' ' editing the registry' ' setting sector sizes' etc thought "ah if the forum comes up with something simple will do that instead".  Seeing you recommend it too I thought "Mmmm bite the bullet" however their definition of tech savvy is wildly at odds with everyone else's, installing using the creation tool was a breeze (in fact I don't remember setting anything).
