Only 11MB/s over ethernet

Go to solution Solved by simtransporter,

Most likely there is a bottleneck somewhere. Something only operates at 100mbps

So i finally managed to convince my parents that it was a good idea to run ethernet to my room.

Everything connected, using netstress I saw that for some reason the connection between PC and Laptop could only come to about 11MB/s.

The setup:   |PC|------1meter Cat5 cable------|Router|------1meter Cat5 cable------|Laptop|

So yeah, anyone an idea what the problem might be?

I Thought the Cat5 cable couldn't be the problem since it is only a short distance...

Thanks in advance, LuukvanA

Either PC and/or Router and/or Laptop are 100MBit/s only

A 10/100Mb connection will translate into roughly 10 or so megabyte connection.

Thanks for your helpful reply!

I checked: PC: Gigabit, Router: Gigabit, Brand new 700 Euro Laptop: Only 100Mbit.

F*** Lenovo, I mean come on, Gigabit network cards aren't expensive, are they?....

cat5 = 100Mbps

cat5e = 1Gbps

meh ... there isn't really any cat5e anymore...  (this has been 10 years now)

If you buy cat5 cables today, they (should) fullfill the cat5e specifications.

CAT5e technically isn't rated for gigabit LAN. We manage to shoehorn it, but it's CAT6 cables that are actually rated for Gigabit.

You know I am talking about ETHERNET and not INTERNET?

If you want to know anyway my SpeedTest score is about 7.5MB/s down and 0.7MB/s up

Is it an ultrabook with an adapter by any chance? I think they just expect people to be on wireless so often that the Ethernet adapter is an afterthought. Adding a gigabit adapter is something most users may not care for, not worth the cost.
