Hi guys

Little over a month ago my GPU caught fire and it has been away for RMA since. Now I was thinking of buying a cheap second hand card since my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics and I am getting sick of my laptop (constantly plugging in and out etc). So I went looking for cheap cards and I found someone selling two 4850s near me, they are €30 or €55 for both.

I won't be playing much games, only cs:go and garry's mod, but would crossfiring these cards be of any use?

Should I buy none, one or both of them?

I also want to just have a GPU in the PC so I can see whether this one will throw sparks at me since I am a little worried that the problem might be my motherboard (PSU has been tested and should be fine).

Thanks :)

TBH I'd stay away from those and go buy a new, low-end card, like a 730, since it should be dirt cheap and it'll let you use your PC.

It's a trashy card, but at least it's a card. After you get your GPU from RMA you'll be left with a fairly modern GPU that you can use on a test bench or just keep as a spare

And what about a 6870 for €50? Thing is that the 730 is maybe a little too low end to even play CS on.

Old friend of mine has been using a GTX 640 for the last like, 5 years. He's never cared about maxing out his games, but he can max out the graphics in Minecraft, and that's all that he cares about, I'm sure you can play CS:GO on a 730.

6870 would definitely be better than two 4850s or the 730. If it's in good shape, you can go for that one

Okay thanks, I'll try to decide between the 6870 and 730 then. The 6870 is way faster but for the 730 I won't need to mess around with drivers in the mean time since I already have Nvidia drivers installed.

730 is 1 gig on a 64-bit bus. It's the trashiest card I can think of that you can still find in stores.

Yeah well I found a 710 ^^. No but the thing is that mostly I am afraid of getting my GPU back, putting it in my PC and see it burn again.

What happened?

My PC suddenly stopped working, the power just went out for no reason. I couldn't turn it on again so I opened the machine too look. I unplugged the power and held the power button for a couple of seconds and took out the GPU. I turned it on and it started (but I had no visuals since I don't have integrated graphics). So I turned it off, unplugged everything and put the GPU back. When I turned it on there were a lot of sparks and an actual fire coming from my GPU.

If your going with a pair Radeon HD4850 in crossfire, please also do factor in your power supply

Yeah probably not going with the crossfire at all, either a 730 or a HD6870.

you can for sure play csgo on a 740, i have done it.  you only get like 150 FPS with occasional drops to 90ish, but it works and is defiantly playable.
