may not be the best section for it, but i guess its for use with a laptop so here it shall start.

my mum wants a new computer, but keeps switching between laptop or desktop. so, genius idea of mine is to get her an xps 13 and a thunderbolt dock with a mouse keyboard and 24/27" monitor attached so its just one plug to turn her laptop into a desktop.

ive seen the dell dock, it does what i want but its £250. are there any cheaper alternatives which will have usb and hdmi to attach mouse keyboard and monitor, but will also plug into the laptop with a single cable which will charge the laptop as well as transfer data?

cheers

Nope not a full fledged dock like what you want remember that using thunderbolt and hdmi or display port they have to pay usage license and Intel are being a bit greedy with the thunderbolt 3 cost coz all its doing is stopping the technology from becoming wide spread like it needs to be.

Side note ate I do what you plan to do at work with my xps13 and it works a charm

I lurk a lot

so am i stuck with the dell dock or nothing then? such a pricey bugger, like half the cost of a small i3 based system! id rather spend the money though if it works well, id rather her on a single system that does everything than spend a little less on 2 and have solutions to unifying her data that she may not like using or understand.

There are other ones but I'm not sure if they've been updated to tb3 yet but either way they cost around the same but the dell one works really well

I lurk a lot
