Hi, This is my first post in LTT forum. My external hard disk WD Passport Ultra 2 TB has become slow these days. Initially I was getting over 100 MBps transfer speed and that reduced to 30-35 MBps now. Having this problem for 3 months. I have tried defragmenting and optimizing the drive but that did not solve the issue. I did not try formatting the drive because I have over 1.2 TB of files and I do not have another hard drive to transfer these. Also as per tests there are no bad sectors. The only problem is slow transfer speeds. Any help to solve this problem is appreciated

You say it's healthy, but that definitely sounds like a failing drive. You might want to run another health test than the one you just tried, I recommend GSmartControl for Linux.

If your drive truly is healthy, you might just want to get a new HDD and back your data up anyway.

Just in case.

Hello Pradeep Murugan :) Congrats on the first post and welcome to the community!

I'd also recommend backing up your data to another drive just to be on the safe side.

I'd run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and see if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. This should verify if your drive is healthy or not.

Another thing you could do is try other cables and ports and possibly another computer and see if the results are consistent. Running a benchmark tool to see the actual transfer speeds of the drive is also an option.

Check if all your drivers, OS and firmware are all up to date.

Post back with some test results!
