Conundrum

Hi,

 

I'm not a fan of crossfire. 

 

I'm selling both of my 390's and I'm want to get either a Fury x or a 1080 but here's my conundrum - I have a freesync monitor. 

 

Benchmarks online put the 1080 10-20fps ahead the of Fury x @1440 but does that matter if I'm going to just get screentearing or have to be forced into using vsync again after the creamy smooth of Freesync?

 

I could lock the 1080 at 60 or 120fps and forget about Freesync or buy a Fury X and not gain as many raw frames?

 

Any thoughts?

 

Besides the obligatory 'wait for Polaris or Vega'.

If you have 2x390 there's no reason for you to buy a new card atm, unless you dont really like CF.

Me, I would hold and wait for VEGA.

Besides, this 1080 is 320mm GPU size, which belongs to a 980 pricing category, which means 499USD. You will see the price drop later on.

Also Nvidia is planning to release their big GPU later, by then 1080 will be priced more attractive and you will have the option as well to see whats up with VEGA...

I want it bad. Polaris is aiming at the mid range apparently. I wish AMD had released their high end now like Nvidia did then I would be in no conundrum.

AMD was smart, they will basically have all the sales for cards under 300USD. Which nvidia has nothing to show for now.

When Nvidia releases their own mainstream AMD will attack the high end when the yields are even better.

I've been through my experience with crossfire here: 

Not great to be honest. I essentially end up with only one useful 390 and in the cases where I get both in full use gameplay is crappy, hitching etc, flickering, horrendous frame times.

 

So I'm looking to upgrade now, so no Vega or Polaris. But I have a Freesync monitor so what do I go with now (next 2weeks)?

Some games have setting like "triple buffered vsync" and to tell you the truth, i have never experienced screen tearing while using that. Yes freesync/gsync is noticeably better, but the other options are not that bad.

I would get R9 Fury X in this case if you most now but personally I think waiting for Vega is better...

The fury is probably the better bet for now especially with the boost it'll get from upcoming DX12 titles. See if you can get a used one for cheap while everyone is selling for the 1080 imo.
