Having built my new computer, I'm now thinking about upgrading my TV to something 4K. I've had my current TV for over 5 years, I use it as my PC monitor and honestly, if it wasn't for the new computer, I'd probably have no thoughts about changing it yet as it still works flawlessly and it certainly doesn't owe me anything as I got a great deal on it too.

Went to look online for a replacement expecting to be choosing a 3D option but I'm noticing most stores list considerably fewer 3D models than I saw when I browsed this time last year.

Did I miss the 3D boat or is the technology still alive and well and I'm just shopping in the wrong places?

TL;DR -  Should I buy a 3D 4K TV or just a regular 4K TV?

My PC:- Codename: DarthStorm | Corsair Carbide Spec-03 | Asus Z170-E Skylake | i7 6700k | Thermaltake Water 3.0 Cooler | 32Gb Corsair Vengence 3000MHz | GeForce GTX 970 Strix | 480Gb Sandisk Ultra II + 4Tb WD Blue | 750w Corsair Builder Series CX750M

oh yeah... 3D.  I remember when that was a thing xD

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

3D TVs were never really alive. There was a period where loads of them were released, but the 3D was always kind of crap.

EDIT: I'd rather go for a regular 4K TV with a nicer panel/stand/frame/whatever than 3D. If it's for PC use, I wouldn't personally choose to go with a TV, though, I would always go with a monitor.

Yeah you didn't really "miss the boat" OP, it just sort of sunk in the construction dock :P

I got a 3D tv somehting like 3 years ago and I never really watched 3D content with it, I tried onece and it work well with passive glasses.

So the real question is, do you have or actively plan to get 3D content and watch it on a 3D tv. As the content is somwhat rare or hard to aquire, you have to ask yourself if you are getting a feature that you will use or a feature.

I did not choose my TV for the fact that it had 3D. I do not regret my choice, but that have nothing to do with the 3D feature.

I would definitely seek out 3D BluRays but if their availability is limited to begin with, it may not be worth choosing 3D over standard 4K.

I think I'll maybe take the time to see just how much content I can actually find that I'd be interested in viewing and make my decision from there.

How much extra would a 3D model cost for you? That would be the deciding factor for me.

I purchased a 3D 55" TV about 3 years ago now and have rarely watched anything in 3D.

Honestly, there doesn't seem to be much difference in price between 3D and non 3D... maybe it's older 3D models sitting beside newer non 3D models, I just don't know.

I'd probably be buying to a set budget and seemingly, I can choose either at the amount I want to spend.
