Hi guys, new member here

I am going to build my first ever PC since I've been running solely on laptops for the past 5 or so years and uni is definitely killing my laptop with at least 12+ hours of workload on my laptop everyday.

My question is, is it worth it to buy the 5820k now as there's new processors coming out for the x99 platform? or is 6700k more than enough?

My typical workload consists of programming ( I'm a comp sci student for the next 3 years ), video editting and photo editing quite frequently as I am working part time as a part of creative team, gaming on weekends and other things.

I am probably going to get a 1080 - do you guys reckon that the $599 version would be better than the founder's edition? And i'm also planning to probably go to SLI in the future

And I am totally sold on the ultrawide monitors - I have had my eyes on the LG 34UC87M for awhile, do you think this is a good pick for an ultrawide monitor?

My case of choice is the Phanteks Evolv ATX

So considering all the long requests I have, could you recommend a build which would be great for this? I am really confused on the CPU and MOBO combo

Thanks in advance

Cheers!

Welcome to the forums!

A few questions first:

What's your budget? Would you play games on it?

i7 4790k | MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition | G.Skill Ripjaws X 16 GB | Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB | 2x Seagate Barracuda 2TB | MSI GTX 970 Twin Frozr V | Fractal Design R4 | EVGA 650W

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

Hi, thanks for the reply!

I am looking at around 2.5k AUD or around 1.8k USD? I can take a few hundred dollars :)

And yes, I will be playing games on it on the weekends, I don't always have the latest AAA titles but I do have older AAA titles (ie the famous Crysis 3, Far Cry 3 and etc) which are quite demanding on the graphics hence the 1080 as I will be running them on WQHD monitor too

i prepped you a parts list you might like.

do whatever you want with it.

PS - i used crossfire instead because SLI is a bit unreliable. do use SLI 1080s if you really want, though,i'm not gonna stop you.

>i also forgot to mention that the 5820K doesn't actually have a skylake equivalent (e.g. 6820K),but you could also use that and DDR3 sticks instead.

Thanks for taking your time to put the list together! :)

May I ask your reason behind choosing the 6700k over the 5820k? I am aware that the extra cores and threads will benefit me greatly for apps such as Photoshop, After Effects and Premier Pro which is why I considered it in the first place but lurking around the internet lately, there are die hard fans on both chipsets which got me really confused :/

Do you think the X99 combo is that much better compared to the Z170 though to justify the almost 25% extra ?

On launch, they'll be the same card. When aftermarket cooler versions come out, the board partners (EVGA, MSI, etc) will stop selling the reference card. Eventually, the 'founders edition' will be the only way to get the reference card (which is sold by Nviida)

And regarding the GPU, I feel like blower style card isn't really a must in my condition as I will have plenty of air in the mid tower, so do you reckon I should wait a little more for the board partners version of the 1080?

It'll really help with video editing. That's the main reason.

Especially if video editing isn't just a hobby

Ah alright, thanks!
And do you think there's a better MOBO? I can shave off the storage as I already have 2 500GB SSDs lying around

I might want to add an M.2 drive and I definitely need at least 4 drives inside because of past HDDs that I have for my past video projects.

And also, I might want to get a MOBO with a bluetooth and WiFi built in since my room doesn't have a wired connection and I have some bluetooth speakers set up - any recommendations on that?

Sorry for asking so much!

Added wifi - capable MOBO, removed SSD

Did you want additional HDDs? How many?
Do you really want an m.2 SSD? It'll only be helpful when editing high resolution or FPS video (compared to a regular SSD)

Hmm, I'll probably need another 4TB - what would you recommend to keep archived stuff such as video project? I already used up approximately 8TB in the past two years so 4TB should last me for another year

I was thinking of putting my OS and critical programs to my M.2 drive and then use my 850 EVO for all other apps and big games such as Fallout 4 - and then I have another trion (can't remember what model it was) as a scratch drive for my video editing.

Do you think adding M.2 will benefit me? and I have read that it will use up the PCIe lanes of the CPU - is that true?

Are the video files important? If so, I'd get 3 3TB drives and put them in RAID 5. If not, get 2 4 TB drives and use them as two drives.

Only if you edit high res video files or high FPS files

Can't remember the specifics at this moment but the 5820k has plenty of PCIe lanes to spare!

The files will probably only ever useful for a possible resume but as I am doing computer science at the moment, I probably won't go down the road of doing video editing and photo editing professionally in the future - so not so important

I see, I will probably only get an M.2 once the prices have fallen or there's a ridiculous discount haha, thanks! :)
