microphones do not work that way, and even if you set a "minimum" level,  as soon as you start talking the background will come back in

you can use audacity to "analyse" a section of background sound and it can be deleted from a recording, but not during live use

The mic doenst have a low pass filter, and even if you added one via software, it could also cut off some of the bass in your voice etc

Hey, really simple, recently I have finally purchased a blue yeti and also made a pop filter for it. I am amazed by the quality, but the only thing that I want to reduce is the background noise. If I am even typing it picks it up, picks up people in different rooms even! I have heard of a shockmount but if there is a software solution that can help I would rather save up for it later instead of wasting even more money now.

The mic is currently just sitting on my desk next to my keyboard.

Oh and by the way, I mean like make it so the mic only picks up noise if it is past a certain volume.

-Thanks, Rinse

SNIP

thats is a big problem with the yeti (and most condenser mics) they are extremely sensitive

Set the Yeti to Cardioid Mode

Set the gain dial to very low

Mount it on a boom arm or mic stand, in a suspension mount (NOT on the desk as your vibrations are going straight through)

Get some sound isolating foam set up in the room if you can

If recording voice over you can use audacity to remove background noise

So there isn't a way just to make it so the mic goes "Oh, this noise was lower than 25%, I will completely ignore it in the recording"?

Guess I better save up for a stand and shockmount :)

There is something exactly like that and it is called gate. For XLR microphones it can be easily found as hardware unit . For software there are VST gate plugins for DAW.
