Hello everyone!

My name is Ian and I'm trying to re-engage with IT and potentially get a career within it.

I am learning the new CompTIA A+ 901/902 and have been recommended this website as a reliable source of information full of active and knowledgeable members by a friend.

I am having a couple of troubles with the TCI/IP section as a lot of this is new to me, up till this point it has all been relatively good as I have previous experience within IT but it was a while ago and it was mainly base level stuff, nothing in too much detail.

I have done a test on TCP/IP and there are a few questions that I couldn't get my head around and was hoping someone could assist me?

"Which of the following network topologies is the most resistant to the failure of a single host or communication channel?" Mesh / star-bus / star / star-ring

I thought it was mesh as all computers and connected to one another directly which meant if one went down then all others could still function? I am no expert so it could just be something simple I have overlooked but I would really appreciate if someone could give me a hand with this.

Many thanks,

Ian.

Your name is all too fitting xD

Mesh doesn't mean they are all connected, it just means there are multiple connections with no real pattern. Ideally a fully connected mesh would be the most reliable. I'm far from an expert but I think star ring would be or maybe just ring though in a ring if two go out then the network is crippled.

A star-ring would be the most resilient since the other option is just mesh and not full mesh. Look at the above diagrams and imagine the start and ring combined to see why.

Thank you for your replies!

So just to double check what your saying is that if the answer said full mesh rather than just mesh, then it would have been the answer because that then means they are all connected to each other? however because its just mesh, they are just connected in a random way with no real structure.

Also, thanks for the name appreciation :-)

Well I'm going to be taking the module test on TCP/IP very shortly but there is one last question that I just cant find an answer to.

"which of the following network devices requires a unique identification for each interface and representative network segments?"

Firewall / router / Layer 3 switch / Bridge

I have tried to look up the answer on google and other various websites but I cant find it anywhere.

I'm looking for some kind person to point out the answer but also tell me why please! I'm not trying to cheat an exam, I want to learn it hence why I need to know the reason behind the answer.

Many thanks,

Ian.
