One thing though, could you edit that post and delete all the text from the quote? It's not fun to have to scroll through the entire post twice. Thanks!

Done. Sorry about that, meant to delete that when I posted, must have forgot.

Ooh, Zorin slipped my mind. I'll mention it. Thank you though, means a lot!

How to dual-boot Linux and Windows

This is a question that I see come up in this subforum so often I've lost track, so I figured I'd write a guide for it a well. For this example, I will be using Ubuntu, but the process is very much the same with most distributions.

Step One: Aquire the ISO file.

The first step in installing Linux, dualboot or not, is to have an ISO file for the distributuion of your choice. The Ubuntu ISO can be downloaded here: Link. You'll most likely want the 64 bit download unless you're using an older 32 bit computer.

Step Two: Burn the ISO to a CD or USB device.

The second step is to burn the ISO to a storge device, which I explained in the main post

On 5/9/2016 at 6:04 PM, steezemageeze said:

....either burn it to a CD using the build-in burner in WIndows (not recommended), or use a tool like RufusUniversal USB Installer, or Unetbootin to burn the ISO to a USB drive.

Step Three: Partitioning during installation.

In order to keep your Windows installation intact, you'll want to select the option in the installer (I am assuming you read the "How To Install" section of the main post at this point) that says "Install Ubuntu (version# here) alongside WIndows (version# here)". This will then prompt you to partition your drive to have both Ubuntu and Windows on the same drive. You can make the partions as large or small as you want, just make them reasonable.

Step Four: Profit???

At this point, you should be able to boot freely between Ubuntu and Windows. If GRUB is not detecting Windows, you may have to run

sudo update-grub

in the terminal in Ubuntu

*Alternative Method*

Your other option here, if you own a desktop PC and have the money, is to buy a second hard drive to install Linux to, instead of messing with your Windows partition. This is the method that I use, since it leaves me free to distro-hop whenever I like without worrying about ****ing my Windows install. Sometimes GRUB will detect your Windows partition, and you can just set the Linux drive as your boot drive, and other times you'll have to just mash F12 to select the boot device

Ok so im about to install Linux on my LAN PC, this is going to be so useful :D

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Ok so i think its time i ask here too, i have installed Linux Mint 17.3 with the Cinnamon desktop because it was the only Linux distro that i have had any real experience with and im having a whole load of problems with CS:GO, some have been fixed(or not, honestly not sure anymore) by random things i found on the internet but here is my current problem:

CS:GO was running "fine" on the LAN PC and everything seemed good against bots getting 45-120 fps on dust 2 then i got in a casual game on Office and it was fine for about 8 rounds or so and then it just dropped to 10-20 fps for some reason, last time this happaned i put a huge ass fan on the graphics card to keep it cool because i thought it was thermal throttling so i installed Psensor to see if it was temperature this time also but no, it wasent, the card never got over 40C whilst playing and i was still getting really shit fps, both CPU and GPU seemed fine with that so im thinking that temperature was never a problem here and that that fan was a waste of my time installing. anyway i have no idea what the problem is here so here are my specs:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

GPU: NVIDIA Geforce 8800GT(custom passive cooler(now with 140mm fan))

RAM: 2x2GB Corsair DDR2 800MHz

Motherboard: ASUS P5N-E SLI

PSU: Dell 300W

Case: Cardboard box

HDD: WD2500YS 250GB 7200rpm

OS: Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3

thanks for any help i might get here :)

Are you using the Noveau (I always spell that wrong...) driver or the Nvidia driver? Have you updated the driver recently? A driver issue seems like it might be the most logical answer. I don't play CS:GO, but I've heard that it'll run on just about anything, so I doubt that your card is the problem, despite how old it is...

Check the drivers (I can't remember exactly where in the settings that is, I don't have a machine on Mint anymore, it should be relatively easy to find though), maybe change some setting in Nvidia Control Panel, then see how it works.

latest drivers from NVIDIA, i have started distro hopping to see if anything changes and so far only Lubuntu has installed right but steam didnt work on Lubuntu no matter what i did on there so im downloading Charlot OS right now to see if that installs seeing as Zorin didnt...

I've got no experience with Chalet or Zorin, so I can't really help you... is Mint no longer installed on the PC?

So I've had a pretty busy summer and haven't really been on the forums, and as a result haven't gotten around to trying out OpenSUSE. I'm just here to say that the ISO file for Tumbleweed is downloading right now, and I should have the SUSE section of the guide written by next week (also it's probably not a bad idea to bring this post back to the top, my notifications were filled with the kinds of questions that this guide was written to answer. Would be nice to get a sticky, but I'm not sure this is really a sticky-quality post... oh well)

I usually stick to XFCE, Cinnamon, or i3 window manager on my systems. I tried MATE once, and while it's nice, and I could probably spend some time making it work the way I want it to, I'll probably stick to my familiars. Thanks for the suggestion though! I have to go make sure I included it in the post about DE's in this thread.

EDIT: yes I did
