Let's start by establishing that I have next to no knowledge around Linux. This is my first time attempting to download and install it to breathe new life into a craptop of mine, because I'll be damned if I'm shelling out for a copy of Windows 10.

Here's what I've done:

- Downloaded a Mint 17.3 ISO on my primary desktop.

- Burned it to a DVD using the inbuilt Windows thing (right click>Burn>select drive>Burn) and an external disk drive

- Put the DVD into the external drive and connected it to my craptop

- Powered on the craptop

- Booted from optical drive

- I got the "Automatic boot in 10, 9, 8... etc." thing, I let it automatically boot

- It then went to a black screen with the Mint logo in the centre

Thing is, it's been on this black screen with Mint logo for over half an hour now. The odds aren't in it's favor, because it's got a 5400rpm drive with 8MB of cache in it which definitely isn't SATA III, most likely two or even one, and it's transferring over what is probably USB 2.0 from optical media. Should it be taking this long? Is it doing anything? The disk drive spins for around 5 minutes of the black screen with Mint logo and then seems to stop spinning. What's going on here, have I done something horribly wrong?

Thanks in advance, have a great day.

How old is this PC you are working with? If its really old, we may have to find you a suitable linux to match like an XFCE version or perhaps Puppy linux

To me, it looks like it hangs when trying to boot the live CD.

Any solution to this?

Linux mint might be too robust for your rig. See if you can get some stats for me. If it's a pre-built pc, look for a model number. How much RAM does it have?

Right now it looks like Puppy Linux might be your solution. It's way lighter than Mint and might be a better fit for getting your particular machine up and running again.

Try a more lightweight Linux distro (lubuntu, xubuntu and such) as suggested. I really think Mint is too heavy for this laptop.

Just tag @ChatDaw so I can answer as fast as possible.
