Stay away from the 580, it's old and tired (I just retired mine for the same reason). Honestly if you have a functional GPU then right now is the time to wait and see what the next generation will bring, if nothing else a price drop on the second hand market.

I'll heap on that recommend pile, at those prices, it's well worth searching for a used GTX960 4GB or AMD R9 380. Performance wise the 380 wins, though I don't know what your regional prices are like. the 380 is about $60 more than the 960 even in the used space here, so depends how tight your budget is too.

60$? That's awfully high, wonder why it's like that.

Retention rate, maybe? Supply and demand? I dunno. 960s have been out for a little longer, too. Or just random bullshittery.

Regardless, both GPUs are underappreciated IMO and OP would do well to invest in either. A few of my buddies have budget builds with both cards and it is amazing how well they perform. It's almost always worth buying the latest series GPU, even if it is lower end of that series.

Agreed - though with DX12 having issues with Maxwell I'd be afraid to buy a 960 with Pascal round the corner

I don't have money to buy that cards lmao. They are over 220$ in my country. I need something used so, little bit older.

7970 or R9 280X usually are cheap and perform admirably

Nvidia GPUs in that range consume the same or more power and run equally hot - you simply had a crappy cooler on it, tis' all.

As for Nvidia options - the only one is a 780/780 Ti but those cost a lot more

I added an edit to cite Sapphire as an exception, but forgot Asus. Sapphire and Asus were doing well. Wasn't the DD a few degrees behind back then due to a literally thinner heatsink? Plus XFX had a ton of shitty coolers for it back then. They had one with dual 92mm fans that were loud and cooler poorly, can't remember the naming scheme.

If anybody tells you that AMD and Nvidia gpus run equally hot, they're full of crap.

Nvidia also has better driver support.  I used to have a 390 and it stuttered like hell.  GTAV would be locked at 30fps.  I would have to change the settings EVERYTIME I play a game.  Not to mention the gps map on screen would be screwed up unless I turned up MSAA.  Guess what, doing that kills your frame rates.

The gpu also got very hot.  Almost 80 degrees and we were talking about a 60 degree ambient temperature.

Stick with the tried and true Nvidia.
