4 Top notch Laptops! WHICH ONE DO I CHOOSE?!

Hey guys,

So within the next 2 months Im selling my pc and dishing out over $2k on a new laptop. From what I've seen I was set on buying the New Razer Blade 2016 being shipped on the 18th of May, but then I started looking at other brands too.

So it is currently between these 4 laptops:

Asus ROG G501VW

New Razer Blade 2016 (512gb ssd)

MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 4k

Aorus X7 v5

It is incredibly hard to pick between them.. I love Razer as they by far have the best quality builds, but the specs on the other laptops are very competitive as well... Please help me decide and put a reason with which one and why :) Thanks!

why not have a desktop? but as far as models go you're the only one who can make a choice, check the specs and the build, some of them are a lot heavier and bulkier than others.

If you are paying 2k+$ then the G501 and the Razer Blade are out of the question - the G501 is not remotely worth the investment and the Blade has so many heat and build issues that it's not likely to last more than a year.

The GS60 is decent but the 4K screen is not good for gaming - 1080p is more than enough for a laptop 15.6'  screen
Aorus is okay but it runs warmer than the GS60.

Personal recommendations:

Asus G752
Lenovo Y900
Alienware 17
MSI GT72

I have a beast of a desktop atm but I'm selling it for portability and practicality reasons. Leaving to uni in a year and need something easily portable that has good specs.

Buy an itx case and motherboard and transfer your system to that, get a new monitor and you have a portable computer and tv solution for at uni.

Taking an ITX system to clase is a big no-no. Trust me, it's not possible

Of course, I was giving an option if the concern was a bulky tower in a small uni room

i'd suggest taking your desktop (or transgering it into a mini itx case) and with saved money by a laptop for class that will have good battery life, portability and decent specs (just not for heavy gaming). A combo tower + laptop is way better than a powerful laptop.

Watch his sager review - he says "The Blade is hot, loud and thermal throttles" when he compares them

yes but it's slim so you can't have both, and thermal throttling doesn't mean it wil have problems

Thermal throttling means the CPU has hit 95*C and is downclocking and thus gaming becomes crappy. 970M thermal throttles at 90*C - we are talking absurdly high and dangeours temps here. And once it starts, you go from 60fps to 30fps then to 10fps

Yeh but don't forget, that is the old Razer right? Now you have the Stealth which is out and the New Blade which is being shipped in May

You CAN have both. It just takes some engineering common sense. The MSI GS60 doesn't throttle, the GE40 doesn't throttle, the Aorus laptops don't throttle.

Whoever told you that you can't have slim AND cool enough to not throttle was either naive or lying.

And throttling is a pretty big problem to me - it means that the processors both won't last as long and won't reach their advertised speeds.

they all aren't as slim as the blade. And you clearly do not understand what throttling is.

With the GS60 you're talking about a difference of 3mm in thickness. That's all. That's negligible. And definitely something I'd safely say I'd overlook (probably not even notice) to have a laptop that won't overheat. I went from a slim P35W to a thicker GE40 and even though it's thicker, it's still very small, very light and doesn't overheat.

I understand perfectly what throttling is. The processor slows itself down to stop itself from roasting on the spot, but even that will not stop it from reaching temperatures that will lower its overall lifespan.

The Stealth also has heat issues - despite being only a CPU + iGPU it still runs hot and is noisy

He most certainly does - Throttling occurs when your components have reached a temperature which can cause the solder to fall apart and thus kill them. Working under such conditions is detrimental to the components' lifespan hence why most Blade 14 owners report it dying within 1-1.5 years.

It's an EXTREMELY small heatsink with 2 VERY THIN fans blowing at it. It's a poor attempt at a cooling solution.
