What do web designers charge?

$o what does a web designer typically charge to make a simple website and manage it indefinitely?

To make some simple HTML/CSS3 design? Not much. To make a beautiful, appealing front-end with a functional user-friendly back-end (usually through a CMS) for your client, far more.

Probably too much for something that anyone can learn to do for free and with a certain amount of ease. It's the harder stuff that earns the money.

 

Usually it's better to do an hourly rate, though.

For a basic web page, creation wise, if you're a newb and still learning, $50 a page. If you're pretty good and make really slick looking websites, $100 a page.

 

To manage it indefinitely? You'll be charging a MONTHLY OR YEARLY RETAINER FEE, right?

 

No web designer manages a website they made for a client indefinitely, without charging for it.

 

As for the retainer - depends on what they want you to do? Simple updates to the page every once in a while? Something like $50 a year is probably fine. If they want you to actually update content on a somewhat regular basis, I'd say $20/month minimum.

 

And that's not including hosting/domain fees, of course.

 

For a CMS website (One with a back-end that the client can log into and make their own updates - like WordPress or Drupal), probably something like $1000-$2000 depending on the number of pages, and complexity of the site - with management of the site being on top of that, of course.
