So my motherboard is reporting that under load my CPU reaches 60c and while idle is around 40c. Afterburner, says that the max I get temp wise is 54c and idle is at reporting super low temps.. like 9c lol. Any reason as to why it would be so off? And is afterburners temps while under load reliable? Or should I just be looking at what the motherboard is reporting.

What specs are you running?

Sometimes motherboard sensors read way off, my M5A78L-M/USB3 had a sensor that was constantly at -127C

Sig under construction.

a10 5800k with the asRock FM2A88X Extreme4+ ATX FM2+ Motherboard. Not overclocked or anything of the sort. Still running the stock cooler though.

I'd take a look with different utilities and see what the sensors read. HardwareMonitor comes to mind

Take a look at what OpenHardwaremonitor says about the temps.

Main gaming pc: Lian-Li Lancool II Mesh Performance - Ryzen 5 5600X - MSI GTX1080Ti Armor - AMD Wraith Spire RGB - ASUS TUF Gaming B550 Plus - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2x8GB 3200MHz - 500GB M.2 (and a few other drives)

Gaming laptop: ASUS GL552VW: i7 6700HQ - GTX960M 2GB - 8GB DDR4 2166Mhz RAM - 1TB 7200RPM HDD

Ill be sure to look into that, hopefully its more accurate.

Overdrive is the best tool for AMD temps.

Tried overdrive, it was reporting that temps were 10c higher than the motherboard said. Plus, it was always showing a really fast rise in temps. Example, I open it, it reads 50c but raises quickly to 60c. I minimize it and open it again and it is immediately back at 50c.

Overdrive monitors thermal margin.

Also AMD cpus do not have a physical core temp sensor it is calculated by an algorithm, there is a sensor under the socket itself i believe. This could be why you are seeing two different temps, one may be the physical socket temp and the other the calculated cpu core temp. also if 9c is showing i would venture to say you are near 25c idle.

I hope so, I would rather not have a cpu get in the low 40 range without doing anything.

And really high thermal margin isnt of any concern? Sorry I just dont understand why they would use thermal margin instead of just telling you what the current temp is.

High thermal margin is good, though for instance if your max thermal temp is 70c as on the FX cpus (this is the temp they throttle at, so overdrive calculates from that temp as max) If overdrive shows 25c for instance, then you have 25c left before you hit throttle temps.

This explains a little more if you are interested. AMD's max recommended temps have not changed since the Phenom II/ Athlon II series (61c, 62.5c depending on source, i think apus are safe to 70c according to AMD's site.)

Well in the next few weeks I will be upgrading to an i5, so what would I use to get the most accurate temps in that case? The motherboards temps?
