So, was planning on using some spare parts from older computers or buy two cheap xeon processors with 8 cores each and an extra GPU for the cuda cores to edit videos on a dedicated server thing. (noob). I watched a few videos on how networking works and thought of using networking to have a shared folder between my gaming pc and editing sever. I would like to know how to set this up because i am really new to networking, are there better options? I would need a network card too right? Any switches or routers or anything else? I am very new to networking please help me, all help is very greatly appreciated, please feed me with KNOWLEDGE, XD, yea...

If it's just between you and your computer and you don't need/want to share with anyone else then use/buy a second NIC and hook the two up directly. Directly connected you wouldn't even need to worry about IP addressing although you could set it up, by default they will auto-configure themselves in the 169.254.x.x network and will talk without additional configurations.

If you want other computers to access the machine or you want internet on the server as well then you will need a switch which connects to your computer, the server, and at least one line to the router.

Thank you very much, so I would need to have two nics (pc and server), connect them. Then I'd need to connect them to a switch that would connect them both to a router to the internet. Is that all?

So if the server and PC already have a NIC on them then all you really need is a switch, connect both boxes to the switch and then the switch to the router.

:D thanks man, one more question, if I want to connect more than one device to the server all I need is an ethernet cable and a spare RJ45 port?

Yah, at the most basic level the switch will determine where to send the packets so just hook up everything to the switch and make sure there are all on the same subnet and you won't have any issues with them talking with each other.

Ohh I have another question actually, could I do more than just file sharing, I would like to know all that I could do with networking (Could I automate anything, I could host a website too right..., Could I make the server a nas storage too) and would any extra functions of a dedicated server be and what would they require?

You can do as much or as little as you want with the server as that's where all the intelligence lies. The router will take care of getting packets in and out of the network while the switch will send them on to their final destination. If you plan on setting up a dedicated server such as hosting websites and whatnot you will need to setup the router for NAT translation which will point to the internal address of the server.

Ok thanks, but would creating a shared folder be too difficult? Do I just share the folder with everyone?

Will you be creating a windows or linux server? When you create a shared folder you can limit it to certain users or let anyone access the share but the exact steps depend on the operating system.
