Looking for a laptop

In higher education; looking for a portable (I don't mean 12 inch Macbook portable, just enough to slip in and out of a bag portable), long battery life, possibly moderately cheap laptop.
Can't do chromebooks, I have a ~<0.8mbps connection, can't really trust the connection for term essays.

Doesn't need to be speced out, just enough for word processing and some photo editing (though I do deal with 20 MP raws).

I yearn for longer battery life, my current 'rig' (read: laptop with abysmal battery life plugged in to a monitor, keyboard and mouse)  can only do 2-3 hours on battery.

Recommendations? Any help is appreciated.

I can't really do ebay where I live, but I'll look into it, thanks.

So, do I hit like or something? XDA has 'thanks' buttons.

You should also look at Dell Vostro and HP Elitebook options

Do you want any features like a touchscreen and a 360 degree hinge or is a basic laptop fine, what screen size? And what is your budget.

I would stay away from the US $400 laptops with a 360 degree hinge. In Australia around the $600 mark they seem to all have the same chassis and if that also includes the same screen trackpad and keyboard i would stay away.

ThinkPad X220 or X230 would be my pick. The 6c battery lasts 6h, while the 9c will do 9h. Both are high quality (magnesium-alloy build) and feature an excellent keyboard. Some configurations have IPS display. The X220 starts at about 200$, the X230 will cost slightly more. If you can't do eBay, you can try Amazon (they sometimes have some good used offers) or ask on the forum.thinkpads.com marketplace.
