GPU.

Athlon X2 for only 27.31$   Best part lists at different price points   Windows 1.01 running natively on an Eee PC

My rig:

CPU: Intel Celeron (duh) N2840 2.16GHz Dual Core

RAM: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz

HDD: Seagate 500GB

GPU: Intel HD Graphics 3000 Series

Rumor has it that we'll first see a gtx 980 and gtx 980ti replacement + the rumors about the fairly high TDP i dont think it would be suitable for your friend's machine.

A gtx 960 replacement we probably won't see until fall this year.

 

And i dont know if Polaris is gonna be a good option since AMD's drivers are not so forgiving on a weak CPU (might change).

hes going to upgrade the whole system so maybe if he finds a good deal on a MB and cpu he might buy it. but gpu first..
