Okay, so i'm building a PC and I picked up the B150M bazooka mobo, then got informed it has a locked chip. the first thought was an i5-6600K but then somebody on here told me if I get the K version I will not be able to overclock it, is this true? If so I would love some like explanation to why that is, thank you :)

oh, and btw: my other option is the i5-6600

The Intel B150 chipset doesn't allow overclocking, so no, you won't be able to OC the CPU.

The 6600 would work fine, or the 6500 if you want to save a bit.

A gaming PC for your budget: $800 - $1000 - $1500 - $1800 - $2600 - $9001

Aha, okay, so if i were to some day upgrade my Motherboard, will i be able to OC the 6600 non K on a like Z170? or will i need the K?

Both the CPU and MOBO need to support OC to do it.

So you need a K series CPU and a MOBO that supports OC

if you get a K version chip, then you'll need a Z version motherboard to overclock it

if you get a non-K version chip, any motherboard that fits it will do, since you cant overclock anyway

you technically can overclock the 6600 non-K on a z170 motherboard, but that requires a lot of work and its not worth it

like microcode dodging and dealing with false temps reading, just dont overclock a locked chip

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

so, shall i pay 30 bucks more for the K version just so i can OC it after i upgrade my Motherboard?

I would. Its up to you though.

oh, and btw: my other option is the i5-6600

In Skylake CPU you can Overclock CPU on a Z170 MoBo, and if you want to overclock a Non K Chip google your Specific MoBo and see if the Past BIOS support Overclocking and downgrade to that "BUT IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED TO DOWNGRADE YOUR MOBO"

if you want to see how here is a link of a Z170 & G4400

But in other Cases like the 4th Generation you could Overclock a G3258 even a i5-4690k on a B85 Chipset but only still on Specific MoBo and Specific BIOS "Still Downgrading your BIOS is Highly not Recommended"

And On Windows 10 some mirco code update block you from Overclocking your CPU hidden in Windows update to how to disable your Windows 10 Privacy Issue and other Hidden Updates See this link bellow

but if this is a lot of work for you just do the simple method, Purchase a K Series and a Z Chip MoBo. Simple but Expensive :)

GAMING RIG

i5 4590 / 16GB / RX 480 8GB
