i installed debian on a usb drive and tried to boot to it but all i saw was a white line flashing on the top left corner of the screen. pressing does nothing. i have installed it correctly. and i installed the bootloader on the usb drive. what do i do? im not going to reinstall it because it took at least 4 hours because the install iso is on a cd-r.

Newer laptops often have secure boot, you should check in the bios, and also boot into a live environment and check if the hdd is recognized

i have an older one. and i dont have any hardware issues. i think i have some sort of software issue with the debian os. and is there some kind of software that scans the usb stick and checks if there is something wrong with the os?

Usually, once you manage to get into grub (something that lets you select what to boot into) there's often an option to check the integrity of the usb stick. But if i were you, i'd really check secure boot, it's been around since 2012

What's your laptop's model?

You could google: "your laptop's model" secure boot

And look around in your bios, it might be in an advanced tab or a boot tab.
Can you use a mouse in your bios?

Sounds like an issue with Grub. Try holding Shift during boot and see if it gives you the Grub selection screen.

Is the usb stick bootable?

Did you set the boot order right?

Try a different usb stick, peferably a usb 2.0 one (some more advanced, larger size usb sticks give problems when trying to boot from them)

is bootable

booting like this: pc on then mashing f12 and selecting the usb storage drive while usb stick is plugged in.

its 2.0 and 8 gigabites. its a cheap one and it works without issues.

You shouldn't have to do that, once you enter your bios, set the boot order right, and then just restart and boot like you normally would, that should get you into your usb
