Hi all,

Im new to these forums, so go easy on me please if i have posted this in the wrong section.

Here is my request;

LTT i was wondering if you could do a take/vid and explain the PageFile System.

Because i understand how it works, but i dont understand if you can increase the actual HARDWARE qty. Ill explain why.

Im using currently  "Kingston HX421C14FBK2/16 HyperX Fury 16GB Kit (2x8GB) CL14 2133MHz DDR4 Blac" & my CPU is a i5-6600k with the Gigabyte H170 Gaming 3 (DDR4 vers.).

Now the problem is this, im using MSI after burner and in the graph where the "Pagefile usage, MB" its max is 8192, but on normal running settings it hovers around 3700, when i load my game it boosts it up to 5700. (NOTE i also have a few other programs running as well, skype, WMP, MSI, chrome 2 or 3 pages on average.)

This is what im finding really weird, normally 70% of the time my "Pagefile usage, MB" hovers @7000, whilst running my game.

My PC is starting to freeze and it hard locks my PC that bad that i have to turn the power off from the power button on the front of the PC. Task manager doesnt work, CTRL + ALT + DELETE dont work, nothing. I was like WTF is going on.

Thats how i noticed or found out exactly when it was locking up, because of MSI After Burner, in the graph Pagefile usage, MB it would hit the max 8192, by the time the yellow line got about roughly 1/2 way across the graph, thats when the PC would lockup and freeze.

What i have tried,

1. I have tried going into device manager and up the qty manually to 20000, and in MSI AfterBurner nothing changed it still said 8192

2. I have went into MSCONFIG and in the startup i disabled EVERYTHING (Non Microsoft) and only allowed 2 programs my Logitech software for my KB & mouse and my antivirus. The only thing that this did was get the pagefile usage MB to hover @7000

I then did some googling trying to find out if i can increase that 8192 QTY to a higher amount, but at no avail. Like i understand how the pagefile system works and all of that, what i want to know is how to increase the physical number 8192 that MSI AfterBurner is portraying?

Everything is working fine just would like to get that 8192 higher if its possible. The only thing that is overclocked is my factory overclock settings with my GPU, it overclocks @+25 Core Clock (MHz) My pc has been running with no problems for about 4months, but in the last week or so my pagefile usageMB is getting really high and freezing my PC and i would like to know if there is anything i can do to fix the qty of the pagefile usage MB.

Thanks

you said you changed the size through device manager?

just to check, did you do this, apply changes, and restart?

also check the maximum pagefile size through windows and not afterburner if possible

Yeah the device manager way i set it at 20000 for about a day or 2 and it didnt change in performance at all just kept still freezing so i put it back at the default settings now after a day or 2 of testing. It was saying 16xx or sumfin like that so i thought, well here have some more lol, thats why adjusted it way over the top @20000

pagefile just dumps any unsused ram to disk to free up usable memory, though if you run out of memory, generally ~70-80% usage, windows starts to use the pagefile as additional ram, but that shouldnt happen with 16gb.

do you know what your ram usage was like when this happens?

yeah, about RAM Usage was around the 60000 - 70000 mark, but it never maxed out like the pagefile usage MB did.

In my graph i have the RAM usage MB on top of the Pagefile usage MB.

Also i had windows performance window up as well, (i know its not 100% accurate) but in there i was using 2.7GB of memory for the game but the % never got over 60% it was hovering around 57% to be exact when my PC froze.

I would of taken a screen shot, but couldnt because of PC lockup

i dont know if this has anything to do with it or not,

but im running 2 GPU's a GTX960 Gaming 1 Gigabyte, on my main monitor, and a GT630 ASUS for my second monitor, NOT using any SLI or crossfire setup, 1 GPU dedicated to 1 monitor. Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

hopefully some else comes along who knows has more insight on this than i do, because im stumped. one thing you could try is disabling the pagefile entirely, and force the system to use ram instead.

yeah i was actually thinking of that too, to be honest.

I dont really need it, for myself i can wait that 1 or 2 secs for things to open lol.

But i just thought if Linus knew more about this then what i do, as i dont have access to hardware like he does to work it out. i dont know if increasing the qty of MHz or GB on ram would even make a difference or not.

But im like you im just as stumped as you!!!

Also i forgot to mention that i contacted Microsoft Support to and all they did was create a new user account and all that did was lower the usage not up the qty like im trying to do.

Funny things is they wanted me to pay them $80 i laughed at them and said for what? you havent done what i asked, i didnt need you to do something that i could of done myself for free. God they are douches over there sometimes.

I know how to lower the usage, but i want the opposite i want to up the qty from 8192 to possibly 15000 or there abouts. But i dont know if its even possible hardware wise.
