You won't be extending the battery life by adding another drive. ONly if you take out the old HDD will you get better battery life.

 

 

Battery life could improve if you were to replace the HDD with a SSD. If you need a hard drive, you can upgrade to a more power efficient one such as a WD green

I thought that this migt inprove the battery life by having the hdd on standby for most of the time.

Main reason for the upgrade will be speed. I am planning to buy an 250GB 840 evo.

What I would say do is make the HDD External, and only plug it in when you need to. That way you conserve power with the SSD and get the speed upgrade, and you have the storage when you need it.
