771 to 775 Problems

I just bought 2 Xeon E5450 CPU's to use in 2 LGA775 motherboards I have, but I've ran into some issues.

 

On a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 mobo would detect the CPU correctly in the bios but windows didn't start. Giving me a blue screen with a different error each time. Memtest finds 65000+ errors with the Xeon chip, but no errors with a Q6600.

 

On a MSI P35 Neo board I had a litte more succes, the Xeon was detected correctly and was stable in Windows, so I started overclocking. At one point I hit the limit (close to 4GHz) and I had to reset CMOS. After that the default FSB setting was 266MHz, instead of the 'real' 333MHz. It is still stable at its 'real default' 3GHz, 333MHz FSB, but I can't overclock beyond 3.2GHz while 3.8GHz was stable before the CMOS reset. Also, the default FSB/DRAM frequency ratio is set at 1:1.5 instead of 1:1. I cannot set it to 1:1 manually, 1:1.25 is the lowest value.

 

Both motherboards have the latest BIOS installed. Do I need to update the microcodes? I know very little about this, so I'm a bit apprehensive to do it.

On the GA board -  It is going to take some time for you to wade through that thread. Sorry about that, but there are no short cuts here. The answer you seek is in that thread though.

You need the latest BIOS updates installed and those generally needs to be modded and have the microcodes also added to detect the CPU properly and work properly, but YMMV.

 

Most of the mobos and cpus are mentioned in the 771 to 775 Great Mother of All Threads on overclock.net and the successfully modded. Google will help you find most of the page references -- but not all of them, The revised modded Bios is often included as an attachment to the post. You will need to register on those forums to see those files and to be able to download them. It's a big plate of pasta to eat, but that's what's for dinner. Enjoy

Thanks, I guess I have some reading to do. Good thing is, I like pasta
