Hi everyone,

I haven't used Windows in quite some time. I decided to install Windows 7 on my M11x R3 to revive its (limited) gaming capabilities. However, I'm not sure which anti-virus software to use. I've read the most recent report that compares the different anti-virus programs, but I'd still like to hear some opinions. Before I left Windows, I used AVG, which I quite liked until it became littered with ads. I barely use my M11x, so I want something fairly light (and free). Any recommendations?

I used Avast for ages, but most suggest Microsoft Security Essentials + Malwarebytes.

MSE is a bad idea. Can't even detect one of the most basic trojans I programmed to annoy my brother :D

For lightweight rare use it should be fine though. If your browsing shady sites then sure you probably need something beefier.

Lord of Helium.

...the only real reason you update anti-viruses so it has the newest database of the code for viruses...most of the time, especially the well coded malware would be undetectable even with the best anti-virus software unless the database get's updated and get's the info it needs to be able to detect it :D

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

that's why a good anti-virus uses also heuristics. Bitdefender (which I use) is really good in this, as 99% of the time it blocked my trojans, but MSE is just really basic

true but with my experience, 3 times out of a few hundreds of times, it didn't block malware I programmed which you would be thinking "that's good no?" but think about it this way, if a experience coder coded malware, we know it's possible to get around it as even you've not said it's 100% which means they would know how to bypass the algorithm used to detect the malware...
