I have a socket 1150 Haswell and I am looking for an upgrade. I am planning to a little overclocking but not much.

My budget is around £180-£200 ($250-$290 USD). Please recommend any 'K' (unlocked overclock) if the standard (non 'K') is within the budget as I don't mind spending a little extra for a K.

(My current option is the 4690K http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-4690K-Processor-LGA1150-Socket/dp/B00KPRWB9G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461002836&sr=8-1&keywords=i5+4690k )

Thanks all,

Rapid.

there are like 2 options pretty much, i5 or i7.  Spring the extra 40 bucks and grab a 4770k or 4790k.  If u have the option between 4690k or just a 4770/4790 go with the i7, overclocking doesn't help THAT much

I can help with programming and hardware.

I'll probably go with the 4790k , thanks to the cheaper price above. Thanks!

I know this doesn't apply to you, but the i5 6600K is amazing value, at least in Canada, when looking at Intel CPUs. It often matches a 4790K in new games (like the 4690K) and doesn't suffer where the 4690K does, like Witcher 3.

I currently have a 6600K that I got to 4.4GHz and it's matching my 4790K at 4.4GHz in nearly every title. Even beating it in some. Plus it runs much cooler than the 4790K even with that near 1GHz OC.

xeon 1231v3 :D slightly over your budget (I think...pretty sure they are around 200-220pounds) and it's basically the same as a 4770 but clocked slightly lower and doesn't have the iGPU

1. He has socket 1150 mobo already

2. Skylake uses the 14nm process which automatically lowers power consumption and that usually results in cooler running CPU/GPUs (compared to the 22nm haswell CPUs are on) plus the IPC of skylake processors are slightly better/higher so shouldn't be surprised for the results.

3. you're comparing a hyperthreaded CPU and a non-hyperthreaded CPU and hyperthreading is known for increasing heat output by a bit :D

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

One thing to point out...US prices=/=UK prices...unfortunately :/ but since you say you're fine with spending a little more for a unlocked processor, by all means, go for it :D

At the link, they are $290 which directly converted (not regarding p&p or tax .etc) is within my budget, and is a K. So im quite happy with that :)

Yes I know, but in Canada where the 4790K costs $500, and the 6600K costs $350, it's a no brainer which to get, as long as its a new build.

After looking at other options (4790k is around £280/$400) I can afford the E3-1231 v3. How does it's performance compare to the 4690k?

Fair enough but just to point out if you were to import it, if you get unlucky and customs do indeed pick it up then expect to pay at lease a 20% VAT and possibly up to a 17% duty fee as well...

That is true and that's without denial with the UK being a 6500k costing about the same as a xeon 1231v3 :P and the 4770k/4790k being around 100 pounds more...

the 4690k is better for gaming due to the higher clock speeds(since the same IPC due to both being haswell) of right now, but newer games are using more and more threads now so in the future, it's possible for the 1231v3 to overtake the 4690k. If you want to also let's say edit/render some videos, the 1231v3 is better due to it having hyperthreading but a nice 4.6ghz OC on the 4690k may be enough to counter act the extra threads on the 1231v3 :P (turbo maxes out at 3.8ghz for the xeon...)

TL;DR, 4690k for best gaming performance right now with you also being able to OC for more performance and the xeon 1231v3 is has more threads which is very likely to be beneficial on newer games and is better for productivity.

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...
