Can you have more than one RAID in a computer at the same time? I would like to have a safe, secure, and steady NAS at home. Many of the builds I've seen online use RAID 1 with 2 drives. But my idea was to have movies on one RAID 1 and then pictures and other files in another RAID 1. Will that work to have more than one RAID in a system or not? I am open to suggestions.

You can, but I would recommend having a raid controller good enough for it.

Cool, so as long as the mobo has enough SATA ports for hard drives and RAID on it, I could have a pair of 500GB hard drives in RAID 1 as well as a pair of 1TB hard drives in RAID 1 in a home NAS. Is that correct?

Yes, as long as you have enough motherboard ports connected to the Intel chipset.

I was going to ask why you would want to unless you had multiple drives already but

I'm assuming you have these drives lying around already? Because you can do that but it's not really the best setup. If you can I'd argue it's better to have one single array than multiple separate arrays. Easier to manage and more efficient in terms of power and storage. Also if you are using spare disks that are lying around and have Windows 8 it's probably worth thinking about Storage Spaces. I haven't used it personally (I'm still on Windows 7) but I'm sure other members of the forum have and will be able to say whether that's a good idea or not.

I'm new to RAID and making a NAS device. So, this made sense to me as far as my limited knowledge goes. I know that RAID 1 is a matched pair of devices that are copies of each other, so which RAID would be the most appropriate?

I'm debating on using FreeNas or NAS4Free as the OS for my device.
