i got a r9 380 from asus but the 2 gb version and you have a 4 gb but i am thinking if i buy the 4 gb version put it in the number 1 slot and my 2 gb in the slot number 2 will it still work because of the different vram i know with amd you can crossfire with something like a r9 390 but will it work with the same card only higher vram????

It would limit both cards to 2gb

best to sell the first card and buy a new card

so just buy a new one or sell my old for a x version or 4gb i think i should sell my old one or safe money for the x version and keep the 2gb for another system maybe

To answer your question, Yes. Basically both cards have the same data stored in their memory. That's why there can only be as much data as the smaller card has memory available. The rest of the memory in the bigger card is entirely ignored and left unused. This applies to all cards and all versions of Crossfire, CrossfireX and SLI too. It also applies to all version of DirectX except, when sometime into the future, fully implemented, the upcoming DirectX 12.

 

If you need the 4GB, your best bet is really to sell the 2GB card and purchase a card that can cope on it's own or two 4GB cards. Albeit, 2GB is plenty for a single 1080p screen.
