So I decided to dabble into Overclocking this afternoon, and decided that before I messed with numbers in the BIOS, I would first run a Prime95 stress test to see my temps. I realized that my CPU was boosting to 3.9GHz, but my temps were 77C. I believe this is way too high, and that something has gone wrong. I have not touched anything in the BIOS. I am using a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 cooler. What's the issue?

I mean, those temps aren´t dangerous, and the TX3 isn´t that great of a cooler... I don´t think you need to worry much. Prime95 puts cpus under an unrealistic load in the first place.

Where would I a tester that put my CPU under a realistic load, and would I be able to OC my chip further?

I used Far Cry 4, but it only went to about 30c, which i think is a little low, isn't it?

I don´t know if Far Cry 4 is a cpu intensive game, so I wouldn´t be able to answer that.

Personally, I would not OC at all with that cooler. An upgrade is needed.

It´s not a terrible cooler by any means, certainly better than a stock. You can oc on it fine, just don´t expect much.

There is no stock cooler with a "K" chip.
It's a junk $20 cooler

I know there´s no stock cooler with a skylake k chip, it doesn´t change the fact that the TX3 is still better than a stock intel cooler. And whether it´s junk is debatable.

Where you will see a benefit from overclocking while gaming is with games that are currently using all of or coming close to using all of the cpu resources. When said game is using all cpu resources it will generate heat comparable to the Prime 95 test. Overclocking will allow the cpu to do more work, but will also produce more heat when work is done.

Junk wasn't the right description of the cooler. It is doing as intended, however those temperatures would be where I'd want to sit after overclocking. Upgrading to a $100-120 cooler will move you into the 4.4-4.6Ghz range at 80C depending on your chip luck.

Okay, that´s a fairer statement.
