upcoming desktop rig

Hi,

I would like to ask for help in deciding which pc build will best fit it's purpose. Currently I'm using my computer for work, and most of our apps are browser based, screen casting and video exporting after, and conference calls through skype and other medium. I currently use a i7 laptop and would like to shift to a desktop.

A sample scenario of how I use my computer:

4 browsers open, 2 incognito, 2 are not. Chrome and Firefox with typically 10 - 15 tabs each.

Recording my screen while above are all open.

Other plans of usage:

Gaming (newest pc games, not on highest setting, just enough fps to play it smoothly).

3d rendering (rarely)

My build:

AMD A10 7870K, 3.9-4.1Ghz, 512 Shaders
Gigabyte F2A88XN-Wifi

Samsung 850 EVO Series 500gb
G. Skill Trident X (Dual) 2x8gb 2400 (F3 2400C10D 16GTX)

Cooler Master Mini 110, 200watts PSU
Scythe (SCBSK 2100) Big Shuriken 2 Rev. B

My goals for my desktop are:

Less noise

Less Heat

CPU performs fine even with the workload

Less power consumption (eco and money wise)

Will the above rig serve it's purpose? I used to have a 4790k with a gtx980 but realized that it just consume more power than I need, have a lot of power when needed, and gave me a huge loss when I got tired of it (sold it after a year for half the price).

Thanks.

Another thing to consider is portability. I have 2 offices which I move back and forth to reason why I have a laptop but it sucks sometimes specially when I am doing a lot of tabs.

except adding another hard disk and replace the PSU

pretty decent office pc with some gaming horsepower :P

would personally kick up the gpu to r9 380 4gb or 960 4gb depending on whether you use shadowplay to record your desktop or not

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

@19_blackie_73

thanks a lot for your response no budget in particular. i can go all out even on the upcoming broadwell extreme. I just felt that I spent too much on my rig when i had my 4790k and was not maximizing what my machine can do. i'm not into any serious gaming anymore. even games on a tablet or my ps4 works for me. usually i play casually on lunch breaks when i get back home. i just want to have a computer that will work with my work load.

btw is gtx 950 > the apu of 7870k?

YES! Any day, GPU will beat an APU at graphics.

thanks for the response

@Moonzy

was also considering shadow play too since sometimes i want to record my game play.

back to topic.

my goal still remains as is. i just saw a ml08 case that seems perfect for my build and my purpose. just wondering if it will look like a briefcase when i lug it around.

are the new skylake cpus better than the most recent amd apus in terms of calculating power? i was also looking into a i5 build but would like to know if a i5 has hyperthreading.

yes `-`

by a lot

i3 6100 2c4t would be on par with the fc6300 with 6 cores for multithread and stomp it in single thread

so yea, a skylake i5 would murder almost all fx processors

3 minutes ago, chunkiebone said:

no, but it has 4 actual cores, better than i3 with 2 cores and 4 threads `-`

Yeah, i5s have hyperthreading, so if you get a 4-core, you'll get 8 threads. i5-6600(K) should be good

@paddy-stone

thanks for the mods. looks good. btw how much ram do i really need? i mean i can purchase 32 gb but wouldn't a 16 gb an overkill given the fact that i don't know which of my apps really benefits from a lot of ram.

@Moonzy

thanks. seems like i'd be going for a more expensive build then.

back to topic. i was considering purchasing high end gpus. what do you think are the benefits of a gtx 970 and gtx 980 ti?

i'd say go for the gtx 970 if you're not using your gpu often

or is playing games at 1080p

980Ti is not needed unless you're gaming often and above 1080p

i would buy a 970 and put it in my computer, i dont game often but its nice to have when i do (what im actually doing now)

not necessarily more expensive, its best if you can be just right in the sweetspot computer, not too much, not too little :P

the price to performance is superb in that region

thanks for providing the term. yes i was looking for the sweet spot that will fit nicely with what i do. i'll think about this. i still have a month or two to decide. was looking into unlocked chips but i really don't see any benefit from them on my current state.

back to topic. regarding ram. what is the "sweet spot" for ram? i am using windows 10 btw and plan to purchase a license for my new rig also.

personally i dont find overclocking cpu that much important, thats why i went with a locked chip lol

8gb, though some are jumping to 16gb now (i know im, coz hardcore :P )

i5 don't have hyperthreading.. i7 do, the i5 is pretty much an i7 minus the hyperthreading.

Yeah, 16GB would be more than enough for most people I would think. I agree about the OC'ing, I OC mine as I get more out of it, but a locked chip like the one suggested is more than capable on it's own for most tasks.

Nope, as far as I know only laptop i5s have ever had hyperthreading. Desktop i5 has no need, intel would do themselves out of business if they offered i5 with hyperthreading as they wouldn't sell the i7s much anymore, lol.
