Network Speed Issues

Go to solution Solved by Gummy,

I rotated my desktop about 20 degrees and everything seems to be working now.

Afternoon all,

I am currently on a 100gb/month plan at 7mbps down and 0.5mbps up which is over 4G (I live in the middle of nowhere). However, I am rarely getting this speed on my desktop. Oddly enough I can get this speed fine on other devices such as my phone, or my laptop. All of the devices are wirelessly connected with at least 3/5 bars but sometimes it is just insanely slow for one or the other, and at times everything in which I have to restart the network. Usually, the internet speed on my desktop is the one to go making it impossible to watch any videos even in 144p and browsing brutally slow. I have had this happen on my phone and my laptop a few times but its usually my desktop. When this happens however, the internet speed for some of the other devices (my parent's laptops for example) are fine. I replaced the network card in my desktop, thinking it was it, after it got to the point where my desktop couldn't even ping the router let alone get internet. This has led me to believe it is a router problem but the router is fairly new and is a decent one; Cisco Linksys EA3500.

And my phone which I'm too lazy to screenshot and put up here got roughly the same as the laptop, so since they were both pretty low compared to what I pay for my ISP is probably limiting me at the moment, however that still doesn't explain the speed drop between my desktop and everything else, which still happens which the other devices are getting a fine 5+mbps

Maybe also try assigning your computer to a permanent ipv4 adress and prioritize it.

Well the issue is definitely the router or your desktop (most likely your desktop).

1) Does it get better if you move your desktop closer to the router?

2) What network card do you have in your desktop?
3) Does it get better if you turn all wireless devices except your desktop off?

4) Do you have a microwave closer, or something else which might be interfering?

5) Left click on your wireless symbol in the right corner. Right click on the network you are connected to and then press "status" or something along those lines. That should bring up a window that looks like this:

What does it say your speed is?

1)I have tried moving around in the past (not the easiest thing to do with a massive setup). But it didn't seem to make much of a difference. Like I said it's random and hard to tell, sometimes the speed is fine.

2)I recently bought a new one, I can't recall the model off the top of my head but it supports up to 300mbps and BGN.

3)I have never tried turning ALL of them off. But I've gotten close to just 2 phones and my desktop. Neither of the phones doing anything really, just connected. Also didn't seem to make much of a difference.

4)There is a microwave but it is not in the path between me and the router, besides my mom sits at the kitchen table right beside the darn thing and has no problem.

5)300mbps:

Try directly connecting to the modem (assuming you have one), EA3500 shouldn't fail like that try a different port also see if the cable isn't damaged or kinked a lot.

EA3500 only has one WAN port, and the little modem piece which all it does is power the 4G receiver only has one output plug, so can't do much there. Cables are all good, they haven't really been moved around much since they just run up through the floor of the basement to the router. I have tried connecting laptops to just the modem to see if it was just me that was slow or everything and usually the results were quite a bit faster than anything I would get on my desktop (although often it was slower than what I was supposed to get, ISP tends to limit you if you use heavy bandwidth). Wiring my desktop to the modem itself would be complicated, would have to move the whole thing downstairs.

Maybe also try assigning your computer to a permanent ipv4 adress and prioritize it.

I can give this a try tonight and see.

Also, sorry for not replying to these in the other post, they had not even loaded up. Slow internet :c

Apparently I had already given it a permanent ipv4 address. So this didn't help :c It's gotten to the point where it takes 30s to load any webpage (if it loads at all) and I'm unable to download or upload anything even as simple as a 5mb PDF. Half the time it shows me as connected to the router but I can't even ping it by going to 192.168.1.1. Halp? D:

Try  a channel change,  ideally not one that conflicts with any neighbours and either channel 1, 6 or 11 to minimise crosstalk.

What is your ip address and subnet mask of the pc?

go to your command prompt and type ipconfig /all and screenshot it and post the output of that

I don't have any neighbors. I live on an acreage with no other routers for almost a kilometer. So in that case changing my channel wouldn't be effective would it?

No, unless you have any other devices that could cause interference for example baby monitors.

Quick Tip [Random Fact]:

Sometimes, some manufacture (wink-wink) have really dumb default settings. e.g. the "802.11n Channel Width for band 2.4" was set at "20MHz only".

This causes my top Speed to "drop" to 150Mbps at max and that doesn't even happen often because there are 70+ detectable Wireless APs around my flat...

That's not really a "dumb default setting" though. The reason is because if you use 40MHz wide channels on 2.4GHz then you are eating up two out of the 3 non-overlapping 20MHz channels, and it will even start interfering slightly with the third non-overlapping channel as well. So manufacturers are forced to keep the 2.4GHz band at 20MHz channels by default. If everyone switched to 40MHz channels when barely anyone's network would work anymore, because of all the interference.

If you want 40MHz channels then you really should use the 5GHz band (far more non-overlapping channels).

It's faster, and it doesn't interfere with most of my other gadgets, namingly, smartphones, and provides a lower latency.

It's definitely a WIN for me.

By-the-way,

I bought my notebook 3 years ago, when they only sell draft-N commercially, I guess if I want something with 5GHz compatibility, I will need the full 802.11n at 600Mbps?

Also, doesn't "AUTO" mean it would automatically switches from 20MHz and or 40MHz? If it forces the card to go 40 only, then should there not be a "40MHz Only" option?

It won't cause interference as long as you are on your own network. It will cause a ton of interference for all other networks (like your neighbors) though.

Some devices only complaint with the draft of 802.11n can still operate at 5GHz. It varies from devices to device.

Well yes. If it's in auto then it will only 40MHz channels if both your AP as well as your client is set to use 40MHz. I can force mine to operate with 40MHz channels but a lot of equipment only allows for "20MHz" or "auto". In auto (on the access point) it will probably scan for other networks around you and if it doesn't find any overlapping channel it will switch to 40MHz, otherwise it will stay at 20MHz.

I live in a concrete apartment, high up in a building, facing the Victoria harbour in HK.

Yea, the steel rebar reinforced walls have a way in cutting down WiFi signals, but still, my notebook is constantly exposed to 70 visible APs. Absolutely ridiculous if you ask me.
