DOOM 3's initial graphics cards' problems

I need an appropriate refresher on how ID rolled out DOOM 3 during its year of release. I've been told by some people that at the time the game was released, not a lot of videocards were able to run it right.

 

Yeah, the 4th one's gonna go for open beta next week and Beth hasn't made any final decisions on what's truly the expected specs for the game. I'm being cautious, even though recent videos on the 4th's closed beta seem optimistic in that the 970 can really run the game.

Doom 3 pushed Hardware to the Limits. But i have no doubt the 970 will handle it. Times have changed.
