Okay, so i'm writing this on behalf of a friend, his internet is utterly shit, well. His speeds are. He has no space on his mobo for a decent WiFi card, not since i gave him my old GPU. I'm tempted to just buy him a new mobo, chassis and WiFi card and build him a new PC just because i hate seeing his speeds so slow, especially when he's too far from the router and floors above. And his mum won't allow him to run an Ethernet from there, and we tried a range extender recently and it worked, for around an hour. Then it messed up, it was a Netgear universal WN3000RP, i think. I was wondering if you guys have had similar experiences with said extender and have a fix, maybe, just maybe we can get this to work.

So far i've tried

  • getting him to manually set it up
  • connecting it via the secure connection button on the extender itself
  • connecting to it via Ethernet
  • positioning the extenders antennae towards the router
  • resetting to factory and trying those again, resetting each time

He's given up, but i refuse to let his connection be so damn slow. It's a joke.

Just for reference, this is his normal speed. (He's paying for a 20/6 speed, i think. Something way faster than that though)

How about powerline then, does the router sit on the same mains power as the pc ?
The router is in the same house, but down stairs. I'm not particularly privy to the inner layout of his house. And he doesn't have much spare cash lying around to buy a decent enough adaptor to take him up to normal speeds

You can get a ~85 Mbps powerline kit for around 40$, that would be more than enough for gaming and utilizing the full speed that the ISP provides him.

Wireless cards cost about the same.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

I'll talk it over with him tonight. But i'm not too sure if he'll want to go a head with that. He's weird.
