So HardwareCanuks recently posted this link regarding video render times on PC vs Mac. In short, the test case went like so.

The four following computers were tested:

  1. Windows Desktop running Adobe Premiere
  2. Windows Laptop running Adobe Premiere
  3. Macbook Pro running Adobe Premiere
  4. Macbook Pro running FinalCut

Dimitri claimed that even though his desktop outclassed the Macbook Pro, FinalCut's optimization on OSX gave it the edge over Adobe Premiere.

What I'm wondering is, couldn't someone just VM OSX on their PC and use FinalCut to render their videos? I'm sure running the VM would be a little more taxing on the system, but theoretically, couldn't you take advantage of a powerful desktop and OSX's FinalCut?

I don't think the optimization is just with the OS, it's also with the specific hardware that's used. I could be wrong though.

The optimizations on OSX are at least partailly based on rendering on the GPU, and a virtualized GPU isn't going to cut it for that type of workload. It would work if you dedicated a graphics card (one that OSX supports) to the VM.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Hackintosh? This is exactly why a mate of mine built one.

Laptop: Asus GA502DU

RAM: 16GB DDR4 | CPU: Ryzen 3750H | GPU: GTX 1660ti
