I own a 680, and if i were to get a second 680 then the combined price of those two would be the same as one 7990.

They cost the same so which is best? 7990 or 680 sli

cheers,

Neither just wait, its way too early for you to upgrade, see what amd have to offer. You could get a 7990 if you really want to but you will hate yourself later down the line as the r200 will be arriving very soon.

In your sitoation, it would cost you less to buy a second 680 while getting similiar performance, since 7990 = 7970 XFire = 770 SLI = 680 SLI. But: Do you own 2GB or 4GB version? If you have 4GB, just go for a second one. If you have 2GB, I'd try shooting it on eBay as the new GPUs arrive and THEN go for a 7990 which could fall to less than $600. But do you have big enough PSU?

Then try to sell it, 2GB really isn't enough for 1440p, so even if you have serious horsepower in your PC, you will need to run at 1080p or lower as time passes or lower your texture quality, just because of lack of VRAM. AMD will be showing off their new GPUs next week, maybe they'll bring a nice GPU for you, if not, you can get the 7990 dirt cheap :) However: Your PSU probably won't be enough for the AMD variant and very close with 2 680s, so you should wait for new AMD cards and decide between the R9-280 (Hope I wrote it right, I mean the 9970) and GTX780. But the 680 is still a very cabable card so you could stick with it until NVidia releases GTX800 series.

I'd wait for Maxwells before doing any upgrades. Meanwhile stick to your 680.

SLI >>>> Crossfire.

What are you refering to? I am aware that the 7990 is a dual gpu and therefore crossfire. I just didn't bother writing it  :P

You can keep delaying for future components, but when will you upgrade if you keep waiting for something newer? Enjoy the present. There is a reason it's called that. Life is a gift. (im so deep right)

In the name of holy Mother of Microstutters and everything bad about Crossfire, please don't ask me...

Crossfire single/dual GPU, single monitor was fixed. Not so much with multi monitor or 4k or more than two GPUs together.

7990 is still horrible choice same as 7970, i'd rather have a single GPU solution... or SLI.

At least now 7990/dual GPU with AMD makes a bit of sense... kinda... close to it. Microstuttering is still worse than SLI but only a bit worse now, it used to be horrible.

The hell, he has GTX 680, what did you smoke? I want some of it.

He by no means has any reason to upgrade his GPU right now. I said wait for Maxwells at least because why the hell would he not wait if he already has a high-end GPU?
